But she already had enough of the spin Picture: ELISE DERWIN Housing a major worry By ALYSSA BETTS HOLLY Hayes is 19 years old and in this months election shell be a first-time voter. It would be fair to say shes not really into politics. Ive tried to get into it, she said. But they all like to pretend everything is going to be perfect. Basically shes already allergic to spin. The youngest of three girls, Hollys the last child in her parents home at Knuckey Lagoon a nice suburb on the fringe of Darwin. Shes been in the Territory for eight years, after growing up on the Gold Coast. She went to Darwins Kormilda College and now works at the golf club in Northlakes. Holly is thinking of becoming a firie when shes older. She has yet to fine-tune the taxpayer instinct that can rightly or wrongly identify a culpable pollie at ten paces. But throw a couple of subjects at her and she knows what areas she thinks are problems. School safety is one. Holly thinks there should be more safe houses around schools like there were down in the Gold Coast. The price of housing is a big issue for the 19-year-old. Rental costs arent encouraging her to leave the family nest. And the cost of buying a house up here has her shaking her head. I love Darwin and I want to stay in Darwin if I move out, Holly said. Mum and dad are planning to retire here. Just the pricing of Darwin is ridiculous. I was just in Victoria a few weeks ago the pricing of houses down there compared to Darwin, it just makes you want to go somewhere else. For now, Hollys not sure which party shell support on August 25. All she knows is she does not want a donkey vote. Im going to sit down with mum and dad and ask them a few questions, she said.
