Coachs Box with high performance manager KIA NAYLOR FROM THE The ultimate success starts with planning MOST of you will be familiar with the happenings of NT Thunder during the 120 minutes of game viewed each week. However, it goes much deeper than that. I often get asked, are you aiming for the premiership this year, back to back?. Absolutely anyone involved in elite sport and aiming for anything less is in the wrong industry. After the high of 2011, I provided a thorough evaluation of the season from a high performance and medical aspect to our head coach and chief executive. The review, addressing what we needed to improve on, what we did well and needed to maintain for the 2012 season, included two pages of improvements. As a club we could have sat back and enjoyed the success, but its a credit to everyone involved, new and old, that we knuckled down and worked out what new strategies and techniques we could implement to evolve in our commitment to provide our players with services equal to that of an AFL club. It doesnt happen in a week, or even a month, but a full 12 months of planning and preparation, with each session carefully set out for one ultimate aim, the 2012 premiership. A lengthy list of strategies and monitoring techniques allows us to carefully analyse and assess how the players bodies are coping with the demands of the sport and travel both physiologically and psychologically and gives us the information to project for the weeks ahead. In addition to the field sessions, players have specific gym programs to complwete each week designed by our strength and conditioning coach Robbie McCullagh and head physiotherapist Greg Dea. These are to address each players minimums and build on their strengths to ensure we remain fast, strong, and agile week-in, week-out, peaking in September. Endless planning, research and time goes into preparing all players for games, and when the siren sounds it all starts again with recovery implemented, nutrition crucial and bodies looked after to prepare us for the next training session. n FOR an in-depth report and analysis of the performance aspect including use of GPS, video feedback, Sunnto data collection, game time, functional movement screening and more look for our four-page lift-out, coming soon in the NT News. Boosted by youth Jack McEwin is among the youth brigade returning for Thunder against UWS tomorrow By JESS WEBSTER TERRITORY Thunder has injected plenty of youth ahead of its NEAFL crossconference battle with the University of Western Sydney Giants at Skoda Stadium in Sydney tomorrow. Under-18 representatives Ben Rioli, Jack McEwin, Damian Williams, Jed Anderson, Braedon McLean and Jarrod Stokes come into the 26-man squad, alongside halfback Nathan Brown for his first game since Round 6. But Thunder has some casualties from last weeks come-from-behind win over Labrador with Ash Duncan (hamstring), Joe Collinson (foot), Austin Wonaeamirri (illness), and Brad Vassal (foot) on the sidelines. Kevin Vearncombe (work commitments) will also miss the 10.10am clash against the youthful Giants, who sit in sixth place on the Eastern Conference ladder. Rioli, this weeks 23rd player, will play his first senior game since the passing of his father Sebastian. Coach Daniel Archer praised the 18-year-olds maturity in what shapes as an important match for young talent to show their draft potential against the Giants. Ben has displayed incredible maturity whilst dealing with personal tragedy that has seen his respect increase even greater within the club, Archer said. Games against AFL reserve teams provide opportunities that support the pathway, along with the under-18 State Academy, for players to impress. Each game seems to gain greater importance in the run to the final positions of the ladder. As a group, we will continue to strive for improvement at every opportunity to ensure we become the best team we can be. Dignan gets nomination MIDFIELDER Jake Dignan is the third Thunder player to be nominated for this years Syd Guilford Trophy for his dominant performance against Labrador last week. Dignan joins young gun Jed Anderson and defender Jason Roe as nominees for the NEAFL Northern Conference best player award. Each week Head Coach Daniel Archer awards votes 3, 2 and 1 to the best under-23 player. A cash award of $500 will be presented to the player with the most votes at the endof the season. ROUND 11 v Labrador:William Far rer 3 votes, Patrick Heenan 2, Mat thewRosier 1.
