YOUR 8-PAGE FOOTY LIFTOUT INSIDE TODAY JUST FOOTY Begins P29 By GREY MORRIS Trio keep coming back to fantastic event Valley veterans Garth Tander, Craig Lowndes and Russell Ingall are the only three drivers to have competed in every V8 Supercar event at Hidden Valley Picture: ELISE DERWIN SUPERCAR legends Craig Lowndes, Russell Ingall and Garth Tander have watched Hidden Valleys V8 circuit grow from Supercar minnow to a giant. From little things big things grow was the popular thought from the trio of champions, who have been in the Top End every year since the first race here in 1998. Lowndes, the series champion in 1996, 98 and 99 was recently awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his services to motorsport. Theres been a big transformation over the last 15 years from what was the first racetrack that had government backing, he said. Somethings new every year the control tower, garages and even green grass. No doubt this is one of the top three major events in Darwin and its great to see the support we get. Lowndes grinned when asked if he should now be called Sir Craig. I dont think its going to change me much, he said. But its a great honour to be recognised for what we do and how we go about our business. Ingall, the 2005 champion, remembers the first race in 1998 and the questions that were asked when Darwin was announced as a venue. To have a race in the Northern Territory was pretty left field because you didnt know if there was a racetrack up here, he recalled. All of a sudden they announced it and everyone was sort of looking at each other a bit sideways and saying, Darwin, a race, V8s? But then we got up here and raced and raced for what now is 15 years and its probably one of the premier race meetings on the calendar. Tander, now with Holden Racing Team, raced for Garry Rogers Valvoline team from 1998-2004. Weve had some success here, so its been good for me coming up to the Top End, the 2007 series champion said. There was a lot of dust around in 98 and we were all here in tents there were no garages. But to see what its grown into is fantastic. This event has grown to such an extent it has become an important blueprint for a lot of other events we go to.
