The Student Services and Amenities Fee is in place at Charles Darwin University and costs up to $220 per student. Corporate Services boss Debra Farrelly said the uni opted to charge about $40 below the maximum fee. SOME of Charles Darwin Universitys sporting clubs are threatening to walk away from the school over a lack of funding. The unis clubs including netball, football, rugby league, rugby union and basketball received no funding from the university last year despite providing recreation for hundreds of Territorians. Some clubs are now threatening to abolish the uni logo from their equipment. CDU has blamed the loss of a mandatory student levy for failing to fund the 19 clubs last year. Members fear they will again miss out on support in 2012, despite a reinstated amenities fee that used to fund sport. Uni Hoggies Netball Club boss Alesha Shepard said that officials skirted around hard questions at the CDU Sport Associations annual meeting. I got the impression that funds would not be available (for clubs), she said. They told us money went into a new gym, equipment, and said they hope just to break even this year. Ms Shepard said her club felt neglected. We spoke with the uni to try and keep the affiliation but I dont see the point as we get nothing in return, Ms Shepard said. Not even promotions or training facilities. The Howard government cut a compulsory student union fee that funded the grants in 2006. CDU received money from Australian University Sport until two years ago. University Rats AFL Club president Glen Speering also on the CDU Sport committee said he would tackle the connection issue. He said most clubs didnt rely on CDU grants to survive but hoped the cash would start flowing again under the new mandatory student services fee. In an email to club members yesterday, CDU Sport general manager Kate Ferris said: We anticipate there will be some changes from the original club funding model due to the changes in legislation. Jail time for theft A PAYROLL officer who duped his boss out of $400,000 by paying himself, his wife and his daughter for hours they did not work will spend at least three years in prison. Patrick Ignatius Cooke, 49, was sentenced in the NT Supreme Court yesterday to six years of jail with a non-parole period of three years. The former Sterling Property Services operations manager was the only person with access to the companys cleaning payroll and stole $400,000 over five years. The court heard he had paid his wife up to 130 extra hours a fortnight on top of the 76 hours she was getting paid for her full-time work with the company. Justice Dean Mildren said Cooke was trusted by the company and its directors, but was uncovered when it did an audit after growing concerns money was being stolen. Lawrie in GST win TERRITORY Treasurer Delia Lawrie has won the GST battle for now. The Federal Government yesterday formally increased the NTs share of the national kitty from 5.5 per cent to 5.7 per cent. That equates to a rise of $82.6 million in funding. The increase is notional the actual amount depends on the national GST take. New South Wales and Western Australia campaigned for a set rate of return for every GST dollar raised in states. That would have meant a massive cut in Territory funding. Ms Lawrie put the NTs case at the national treasurers conference. She said the Federal Government had recognised the Territory as an emerging resource powerhouse and that investment now will benefit all of Australia in the long term.
