But an important piece of Australian history was also on board. The journals, maps and logbooks created by the first man to sail around Australia Matthew Flinders were on display in the ships picturesque library. They would travel the same route on which Flinders created them more than 200 years ago, but this time they would do it in style. State Library of New South Wales senior curator Paul Brunton was the man in charge of guarding the priceless artifacts. The academic said Flinders journey was significant because it recorded the first time that anyone had circumnavigated Australia. The ship Flinders chartered, the Investigator, was one tenth the size of the QM2s deck. It held 88 crew members and a very important cat, Trim, whom Flinders often wrote about in his journal. Although the QM2 was following the same route as the Investigator, the similarities ended there. The food is much, much better and as far as I know there is no dysentery or scurvy both of which affected Flinders on his journey. The QM2 has four diesel engines, which each weigh 217 tonnes. It can reach speeds of 55km/h and produce enough thrust to launch a jumbo jet.
