Jets end hopes of Adelaide SCORES NEWCASTLE JETS 1 (Tarek Elrich 39m) dADELAIDE UNITED0 at Hunter Stadium. Crowd: 10,383. Referee: Ben Williams. SOCCER By LIAMHOWITT TAREK Elrich scored his first goal of the season to give Newcastle Jets a 1-0 victory over Adelaide United last night, effectively putting the South Australian side out of contention for the A-League finals. The Jets, at least temporarily, climbed over the Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC into fifth spot on the table. Adelaides night took a turn for the worse when Francisco Usucar limped out of a challenge with an injured hamstring after 19 minutes, forcing coach John Kosmina to make an early change. Persistent fouling from both teams created a stopstart affair but when Jeremy Brockie hit a shot over the bar on 34 minutes after some good lead-up play from Ryan Griffiths it was clear the home side felt Adelaides defence was tiring. The deadlock was broken five minutes later when Elrich slotted home his first of the season after great vision from Francis Jeffers. Neither side created any real scoring opportunities in the second half. Adelaide were kept fairly quiet for most of the match but showed plenty of desperation in the final 20 minutes as they threw caution to the wind to claim an equaliser and although they threatened a couple of times the Jets were able to hold on. Newcastles Michael Bridges went close late with a volley only just off-target but he was ruled offside. Forces Nathan Sharpe delivers the ball from the line-out against the ACT Brumbies last night Super start for ACT RUGBYUNION SCORES CRUSADERS 19 (Robert Fruean try; Tyler Bleyendaal con 4 pen) dBLUES 18 (Chris Lowrey, David Raikuna tries; Michael Hobbs con 2 pen) at Eden Park. Referee: Chris Pollock. Crowd: 30,000. BRUMBIES 19 (Robbie Coleman, Jesse Mogg tries; NicWhite 3 pen) d WESTERNFORCE 17 (James Stannard try 4 pen) at Canberra Stadium. Referee: Bryce Lawrence. Crowd: 14,211. THE Brumbies new Super Rugby era under Jake White began as planned with a hardfought 19-17 victory over the Western Force in their season-opener last night. Trailing 12-9 at half-time, the Brumbies came out revitalised in the second half, scoring two tries and holding the Force back in the final minutes. Fielding a new-look and largely green side, the Brumbies had the most to prove in the opening round clash and didnt disappoint the 14,211-strong crowd. The Brumbies will now be able to start Round 3 with eight points up their sleeve given next weekends bye. The opening half was a gritty tug-of-war between two sides keen to start well, but neither could claim an edge. The scoreboard was only troubled courtesy of the refs whistle, with the Forces James Stannard finishing the half with four penalties and the Brumbies Nic White booting three. Arguably, the Brumbies had the most to prove in the game but, apart from Whites on-song penalty goal from 53m out and some impressive breaks from debut winger Jesse Mogg, the home side didnt appear to be delivering. It took until the second half for the Brumbies to look dangerous and Mogg was the beneficiary five minutes in after accelerating on to a White pass from close range. MEANWHILE, Rookie five-eighth Tyler Bleyendaal kicked five goals from seven attempts to nudge the Canterbury Crusaders to a 19-18 win over the Auckland Blues at Eden Park. The 21-year-old Bleyendaal, starting a Super match for the first time as understudy to injured All Blacks star Dan Carter, landed a conversion and four penalties for 14 points as the visitors won despite scoring one try against their opponents two. The Crusaders, runners-up last year, showed resilience by twice rallying to hit the front in a match that had three lead changes. A close-range drop goal attempt in the dying seconds by scrumhalf Piri Weepu, playing his first match for the Blues after departing the Hurricanes, could have forced a fourth lead change and given a win to the home team, but the Crusaders dashed up quickly in defence to deflect the kick.
