Commander Chris McDevitt said Asian workers were being drawn to the NT by the strong economy and job opportunities. He said they arrived on holiday or working holiday visas and were met at the airport by their sponsor. Mr McDevitt said the victims were told they owed tens of thousands of dollars to the human trafficker for obtaining their visa. Their passport and ID were taken away. The victims were set to work in the hospitality, agriculture and sex industries. Mr McDevitt said they worked long hours without breaks and were housed by the trafficker at an exorbitant rent. Mr McDevitt said the exploitation was modern-day slavery. An estimated 1.36 million people are being tafficked in South-East Asia and police know some are being put to work in Australia, despite geographic isolation and strict immigration laws. Nearly 190 people have been rescued by police during 320 human trafficking operations in Australia since 2003. Of those, 167 were women and 151 were victims of sexual servitude. But while the sex industry is a major target of human trafficking rings, there is an increasing trend towards debt-bondage and slave labour. The AFP is to hold multi-agency forums about the problem in Darwin and Alice Springs.
