Boy, 5, lives as girl Heused to cry and try to cut off hiswilly out of frustration LONDON: A five-year-old who believes he is a girl trapped in a boys body and tried to cut off his genitals has become one of the youngest children to be diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID). When Zach Avery, from Purfleet, Essex, was aged three he told mum, Teresa, Mummy . . . Im a girl, The Sun reports. He chooses to wear pink dresses and ribbons in his long, blond hair and has been accepted by other kids at his school, which made the toilet block genderneutral in support. Zach was diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder, where the brain tells a person they are a different sex from their body. He would become upset if anyone referred to him as a boy, Teresa told the tabloid. He used to cry and try to cut off his willy out of frustration. Figures show 165 children have been diagnosed with GID in the past year in the UK alone. And US medical journal Pediatrics has also reported rises in the disorder among children. A report by Dr Norman Spack, one of three reports published yesterday, details a four-fold increase in patients at Childrens Hospital Boston, where he is director of one of the Americas first gender identity medical clinics. His Gender Management Service clinic, which opened at the hospital in 2007, averages about 19 patients each year, compared with about four a year treated for gender issues at the hospital in the late 1990s. The report details 97 girls and boys were treated from 1998-2010 the youngest was four years old. Kids that young and their families get psychological counselling, and are monitored until the first signs of puberty emerge, usually at age 11 or 12. Then children are given puberty-blocking drugs.
