The keenly contested events will be played over two days starting with the city and northern suburbs middle and senior schools today, and city cluster primary schools tomorrow. A total of 41 teams have registered across all divisions of the two events. Dominant among the competitors are Essington School, with one senior and six middle school teams, and Darwin Middle School, with five teams in that division. Nightcliff Primary and Essington School have entered three teams each in the primary schools event. Participants from the middle and senior event may be identified to represent City Cluster at the School Sport NT under-15/ 16 development selection camp in May, and go on to represent the NT at the School Sport Australia Championships being hosted in Darwin in August. Primary school participants are vying for places on the two City Cluster under12/13 squads to represent the cluster at the School Sport NT championships in April. At this tournament, students will be selected to represent the NT at the School Sport Australia Championships, in Adelaide later in the year. The championships allow schools to score points towards the City Cluster Sports Shield awards. IAN BUTTERWORTH Rodeo bullfighter clown Jason Brooker is to appear at an international event in Victoria this weekend, leading to the chance of a trip to the US rodeo circuit No clowning around By IAN BUTTERWORTH TERRITORY bullfighter clown Jason Knackers Brooker has put retirement on hold after being given an opportunity to ply his trade in the US later this year. Brooker has been clowning in the Territory for five years, after ending his professional bullriding career following the death of his best mate, caused by a bull. With his wife and new daughter in tow, and with retirement on his mind, Brooker was attending his 17th Tamworth Country Music Festival last month when he was surprised by an offer of bullfighter clown gigs in Victoria, with the possibility of a trip to the US later this year. I was definitely ready to retire but couldnt resist the offer, and especially as it may lead to a gig with the Professional Bullriders Association in America, which is really big time, he said. Im going to clown at a country rodeo in Whittlesea, Victoria, this weekend and have also been invited down to a large scale rodeo in Bendigo in two weeks time. Working at the events will give Brooker enough points on the Victorian circuit to clown at The International event being held at Rod Laver Arena later this year. The International at Rod Laver will feature riders from Brazil, America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, and opens up the possibility of an invitation to America, which is the ultimate, he said. Brookers attendance on the weekend is self-funded and, together with his wife, who will travel as the official rodeo nurse, he is looking at a cost of $1500-$2000. Anyone wishing to offer financial support can contact Brooker on 0434 572 804. Sri Lanka get over India in controversial match SCORES SRI LANKA 6-289 (L Thirimanne 62, T Dilshan 51) d INDIA 238 (V Kohli 66, I Pathan 47; N Kulasekera 3-40, T Perera 4-37). DROPPING the ball almost cost Sri Lanka after spinner Ravi Ashwin caused a stir by holding on to it before they clinched a vital 51-run one-day win over India at the Gabba last night. Virat Kohli (66) was dropped twice and Suresh Raina (32) once in an ominous 92-run fourth wicket stand before India were dismissed for 238 in the 46th over chasing 290 for victory. But a big talking point came in the Sri Lankan innings when Indias Ashwin attempted a Mankad dismissal. He knocked off the bails as he came into bowl in the 40th over and appealed with non-striker Lahiru Thirimanne (62) well out of his crease. Umpires Paul Reiffel and Billy Bowden conferred with Indian captain Virender Sehwag. But Sachin Tendulkar walked over and suddenly Indias appeal was withdrawn. Late hitting by Irfan Pathan (47) gave India some hope but it was not enough to stop them dropping to the bottom of the tri-series table.
