Chronic diseases can be the result of influences during pregnancy, childhood, or adolescence. Influences on chronic conditions later in life include, but are not limited to, whether a mother smokes in pregnancy, a childs diet and level of physical activity, exposure to domestic violence, parenting, and social determinants of health such as level of schooling, and the socioeconomic status of the family.
