Not only is her son living on the other side of the world, getting home to Australia just once a year, hes working so hard theres been little time for a personal life. He is loath to go into detail, but his long-term relationship with former McLeods Daughters co-star Rachael Carpani ended this year, as the pressures of starring on hit US drama series The Glades took their toll. When youre on the show, your personal life grinds to a halt, Passmore says. My mum will tell you its a terrible sacrifice to make. I never seem to call enough. For her part, Carpani, who is filming a key role in the new US drama Against the Wall, recently said: I am single and happy. We work really long hours on the show. Im exhausted. Passmore takes us through his own schedule: 18-hour days, six-day weeks, in the steaming hot wilds of the Florida coast. Were talking gator country, or worse for some, the occasional habitat of the Kardashians and Snooki from Jersey Shore. Not that he gets out to celebrity hot spots, keeping to himself, in a bubble of exhaustion, serving the brutal regime of series television. But before you cue the violins, lets take a reality check here. The bubble is a luxury, or as he calls it awesome, apartment near Fort Lauderdale, part of the deal as leading man on a quirky series, which has drawn praise for the actor and flattering comparisons to Australias top TV export, Simon Baker. Then there are the Gladies, the female fan club hot and bothered by Passmores performance, who arrive by the busload. With a wry smile, he acknowledges this upside to the job. We have a very loyal, very opinionated audience. You sign a few autographs, both on pads and a little bit of bare skin. But hey, if people like the show, youve got to be appreciative, he says, grinning. On screen, things are heating up between Passmores character Jim Longworth and nurse Callie (Kiele Sanchez), a single mother worn down by his charm.
