Figures coming from within the industry have the as yet unofficial quota for imports from Australia at 283,000 head accompanied by 34,000 million tonnes of frozen boxed beef. That is well down on the quota of about 500,000 head allocated for import from Australia this year and less than half of the 700,000 head quota from 2009. It also about halves the amount of boxed beef to be sent to Indonesia. The Territory had expected to ship about 300,000 head of its own cattle this year but NT Department of Primary Industry figures to November 30 showed only 182,524 head had been exported. This was about 55,000 down on the 237,613 shipped by the same time last year. In 2009 there were close to 290,000 head exported from the NT. The drop was caused by the temporary ban on the trade initiated by the Australian Government. In early July the director general of livestock with the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry, Prabowo Caturrososaid there would be quota cuts but his country aimed to import a total of 500,000 head of cattle in 2011. At that time the country had about 14.43 million cat tle available for slaughter, above the 14.2 million the government believes Indonesia needs to become selfsufficient in terms of beef production by 2014. Last year Indonesia also announced they would not accept cattle heavier than 350kg which meant more older animals had to be sent for slaughter down south at lower prices. Ex-footy star tells story walking Ken Bennett is looking for someone to walk with Picture: PATRINA MALONE KEN Bennett is looking for someone to walk with him. The 71-year-old from Fannie Bay is just past the second anniversary of a car crash near Weipa, in North Queensland, where his car rolled three times and almost killed him. He suffered a stroke, serious head injuries and a broken scapula. He has been walking with the aid of a stick for about a year. But he lacks balance and needs help. This was from a man who ran 10km the night before his accident, ran marathons until he was 43 and played in the 1958 premiership with Collingwood when he was 18. Im looking for a walking partner or partners, I want to get out, walk seven days a week at a time to fit in with the rest of my program, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and gymnasium, he said. But the most important part iswalking because when you have brain damage, the brain doesnt tell the muscles to operate in the way that they did before you had the injuries. So, youve got to retrain those tracks again. Mr Bennett walks at East Point and is looking for people who are reasonably strong to help him. You can email him at kebennett31 @bigpond.com.
