Department of Construction and Infrastructure Annual Report 2010-2011 49 Performance Reporting East Arnhem is home to the Yolgnu people and has strong ties to Aboriginal tradition and culture. East Arnhem The East Arnhem Region is situated in the far north east of the Northern Territory, spanning 41,000 square kilometres and is bound by the pristine coastline of the Arafura Sea. It extends from Nhulunbuy in the east to Numbulwar and Bulman in the west. The region is home to the Yolgnu people and has strong ties to Aboriginal tradition and culture. Its tropical, monsoonal climate makes it inaccessible by road for up to five months of the year, depending on the severity of the wet season. This, together with the remoteness of the region, creates great logistical challenges for the team at DCI in managing projects. East Arnhem Highlights Completed Bickerton Island Airstrip Supported Groote Eylandt community to establish quarry providing crush sealing aggregates for the Umbakumba Road Supported trainee to complete Certificate 1V in Building Strengthened relationships with client agencies Significant delivery of specific maintenance upgrades to remote housing stock Delivery of eco friendly education facilities in remote communities.
