Department of Construction and Infrastructure Annual Report 2010-2011 55 Performance Reporting The iconic and geographic centre of Australia. Alice Springs Region The Alice Springs Region is the iconic and geographic centre of Australia. Featuring spectacular landscapes and surrounded by the arid Tanami and Simpson Deserts, the region covers an area of over 527,000 square kilometres. The Stuart Highway is the major north-south transport route, while other roads such as Plenty Highway, Tanami Road and Lasseter Highway make up the 7,600 kilometres of roadway in the region. The Alice Springs team is the largest of those in the regions. Staff work hard to keep key access routes open to connect communities, tourists and industry, while delivering significant infrastructure for local residents. The Alice Springs Region currently works closely with its numerous clients to successfully deliver their Capital Works, Minor New Works, Specific Maintenance and Urgent Minor Repairs projects. The division is actively engaged with industry and other government departments to produce and maintain assets, as well as providing project management for these works.
