The Japanese compact was best in showrooms for the month, trumping the Holden Commodore again and also relegating the locally made heavyweight to second in the year-to-date sales charts. Ironically, the Holden Cruze is now also closing on the Commodore as a growing number of Australians move to small cars and the Toyota Corolla is looming as deliveries from Japan return to normal following the natural disasters earlier in the year. A total of 4234 Mazda3s were delivered last month, compared with 3682 Commodores and the Cruze now built in Adelaide and tweaked for Australian buyers filling third place with 3234. The Mazdas second monthly win for 2011 also gives it a 471-car margin over the Commodore in the totals to the end of August. The car is relevant in so many ways. Its hitting the mark and weve seen the whole market shift towards small cars. It just ticks a lot of boxes for customer, says Mazda spokesman Steve MacIver. The key is consistency. Weve only had two wins but when the Commodore drops away it drops away quite a bit. Weve also been second five times and third once. But Mazda also had a big boost in August that lifted the 3 from its regular monthly sales rate of about 3500 cars. We had M-Day, our annual sale, in the middle of the month, which has given us a boost, Mr MacIver says. Holden is likely to hit back from later this month as it begins deliveries of a Commodore thats had another tweak, with some bright new summer colours and a fuel economy boost to everything short of its performance-focused V8 models. It also is celebrating the local acceptance of the Cruze. We have sold almost 10,000 Cruze sedans in the last three months, which is a significant achievement with only one body style, says Holden director of sales Phillip Brook. Behind the big three, the Corolla is becoming a solid force again and Australians enjoyment of ute-style family motoring took the HiLux to leading workhorse for the month as Toyota continued its longrunning spot as the overall number one maker in the showrooms. The August result was up by 7.3 per cent over 2010, the second straight month when sales have eclipsed the previous year following a big slide earlier in 2011. Despite these encouraging figures, year-to-date new-vehicle sales are still trailing 2010 levels by some 4.4 per cent, or 30,356 vehicles, says Steve Payne, acting CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
