Manningmaymiss NFL season INDIANAPOLIS Colts quarterback Peyton Manning underwent neck surgery and could miss the entire NFL season as a result, the NFL club announced. After tests and consultation with doctors, Manning underwent an anterior neck fusion that typically would take two to three months to heal. The operation was the third for Manning, 35, in the past 19 months. Manning signed a five-year deal worth $84.5 million with the Colts in the off-season. Rodgers touchdownhat-trick AARON Rodgers threw for three touchdowns as the reigning Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers beat the New Orleans Saints 42-34 in the opening game of the NFL season. Rodgers became the first player to throw three touchdowns in the first quarter of an opener since Buffalos Jack Kemp in 1964, and traded big plays and scoring drives with Saints captain Drew Brees all night. Rodgers completed 27 of 35 passes for 312 yards. Jodie Coles is likely to be tough to beat in the junior dragster bracket in the second-last round of the 2011 Track Championship drag-racing series Pedal to the metal MOTORSPORT BYGREYMORRIS THE second-last round of the 2011 Track Championship drag-racing series fires up at Hidden Valley tonight. One young lady who will be hard to beat in the junior dragster bracket is Jodie Coles, who has developed an unassailable lead by grabbing a finals berth in all four rounds this year. Coles is 50 points clear of her rookie counterpart Caitlin Burt and in the running for the Champion of Champions trophy. The trophy is awarded to the driver who manages to accrue the most points in any bracket. But Coles faces some fiery competition, including from street-bike competitor Geoff Hawkins and super sedan driver Allan Arthus, who are only 20 points behind. Arthus needs only a finals berth in one of the last two races of the season to secure his seasons victory. But with 30 points on offer for a win in each round, Wayne Harris can still grab top spot in the super sedans. The modified bikes ranks have opened up after the forced retirement of joint points-leader Robert Harrison from an ongoing hip injury. That leaves Jabiru-based Dave Denner with a 25-point lead over Suzuki rider Leith Darrach. Qualifying begins at 3pm before the feature racing starts at 7pm. Hoggies line up the Pints NETBALL By JESSWEBSTER HOGGIES will face Pints in next weeks Darwin Netball Association grand final after a 42-36 preliminary final win over Tracy Village at Marrara on Thursday night. Hoggies, twice runner-up to Pints in the past two grand finals, hope it will be third time lucky when the dominant teams square off in the season decider on Thursday at 7.45pm. The Falcons were gallant in defeat after a fantastic season when they turned around a dismal 2010 to be a genuine title contender. But Hoggies, armed with skilful youth and some wise heads, used their finals experience to get the job done and set up another shot at the ultimate title. The grand final is shaping to be yet another classic encounter between the two sides, which have been the benchmark of the competition for the past few years. Pints took the honours in round one by 12 goals, while Hoggies turned the tables in round eight with an impressive 21-goal hammering. The Green Machine won the most recent encounter in round 15 by six goals. Pints won by 12 in last years premiership decider.
