The Australian Bureau of Statistics says resi dential building approvals the number of homes given permission to be built rose for a second consecutive month in July. Approvals jumped 12.1 per cent to be up 29.1 per cent over the three months. But Housing Industry Association NT director Robert Harding warned Territorians not to get too excited. The extent of the rebound ought not to be overstated, he said. Approvals are increasing from a fairly deep trough they were still down in the July quarter by nearly a third compared with the same time last year. Mr Harding said the latest solid result was helped by a large number of units. Detached houses largely held their course, with a slight improvement. The other major trend in Territory housing is the sharp increase in the number of properties being sold. There are more than 1000 homes on the market in Darwin and Palmerston. But real estate agents and vendors hope these will be lapped up over the next few months. Property prices dipped over the past three months. Real Estate Institute NT head Quentin Kilian (pictured) said the price drop wasnt an unmitigated disaster. He said it showed vendors were accepting more realistic prices for their properties. The fall in prices is patchy, however Darwins northern suburbs are holding their own.
