Vollie News Thursday 20th October 2011 Page 3 for the team as there was a number of new members that day. A number of scenarios were run utilising the mannequin and simulating a case of serotonin toxicity induced by illicit drug use and a cardiac arrest scenario. It was good to be able to participate in such scenarios as the capability of the MAT meant advanced treatments not usually available to me in the ambulance environment. Cannulation training was also undertaken for a number of the student health professionals present (see pictures attached). A police drug operation outside the venue and the cold weather thankfully meant relatively few casualties seen by the MAT. A small number of drug and alcohol effected individuals were seen throughout the latter half of the day and quite a novelty was also treating a patient who was drug and alcohol effected but also suffering from hypothermia as well. Luckily it wasnt me as a very kind Rob Correa lent me his spare polar fleece jacket later in the evening. It was the first time I have had to give warmed intravenous fluids and warm packs for a casualty since living in the Darwin area where cool fluids and icepacks are usually the order of the day. Overall 10 patients were treated by the team ranging from the glue closure of a wound to the treatment of the hypothermic patient. Next trip will be off on a semi tour of Australia heading to Perth Royal Show at the start of October then heading back to Victoria for the Phillip Island Moto GP in mid October then back to Perth for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at the end of October. Stand by for reports and photos from each event.
