Brent said it was the biggest of the trip and was carefully released back into the water. "Unfortunately it went belly up and a grey nomad picked it up as it was floating on the river and back at the camp claimed to have caught it on a gold bomber ... sneaky old bugger," Brent reported Toyota Australias new NT operations manager Chris Maroney was shouting Oh what a feeling after landing his first barra which measured 75cm, caught up the Little Howard on Saturday Kim McGregor caught a one-metre queenie in Milne Inlet on the way back to the ramp after an otherwise non-productive day on the water. She wins our fish pic of the week for her efforts VVoolluunntteeeerr ccaalllloouutt ffoorr ccooaassttgguuaarrddss TTHE establishment of adedicated VolunteerCoastguard here in Darwin is an exciting development and one which deserves extensive community, government and corporate support. One in four households in the NT own a boat, and a staggering one in three in the greater Darwin area. Those numbers mean a staggering number of recreational pleasure craft are plying our northern waters day in and day out. The reality is that some of these craft will get into difficulties whether it be bad luck, mechanical issues, inclement weather, or in some cases, sheer stupidity. Whatever the reason, a boat in distress is exactly that, a boat in distress. The current in situ emergency resources are excellent but anything that can be put in place to complement those resources can only be a good thing. The Australian Volunteer Coastguard movement is a well run, highly organised and professional outfit that has, over a long period of time, provided an outstanding service to boaties all around the Australian coastline. The planned new Darwin Volunteer Coastguard is now calling on interested people to put their hands up. They are currently looking for the following: Regular members (volunteers for radio, boat crew, training and administration) and associate members (boaties and yachties who receive free roadside assistance). Comment by the Mad Mullet themadmulletnt@gmail.com AT THE time of writing it would appear the dry season has finally arrived and the unseasonal weather of the past weeks has had an interesting impact on the local fishing scene. The warmer humid conditions have certainly kept the barra on the move in Darwin Harbour, Bynoe Harbour, Saltwater Arm and Shoal Bay. Saltwater Arm in particular has been very good with barra to the mid-90s being taken on lures and live bait. Darwin Harbour has been terrific for barra and threadfin salmon but the size has been a bit patchy with a lot of sub55cm fish doing the rounds. The good news from the harbour is the numbers of big mangrove jacks starting to make an appearance. The East Arm rock wall has produced jacks to 3kg for crews trolling the rock wall in tight with B52s. Good jacks have also been taken from the upper reaches of the Elizabeth River, Middle Arm and Pioneer Creek. Pike bream are continuing to build in numbers along the harbour foreshores with anglers using light spin sticks and lightly weighted prawn baits scoring up to a dozen tasty bream on the rising tide. A bit of chook pellets as burley will improve your chances dramatically. Good golden snapper and the odd good jew have been taken off the harbour wrecks. Good jew on offer at Town Hall. Offshore has been excellent with the run of billfish off Dundee continuing to amaze even the most passionate 'billy' chaser. Sailfish still doing the rounds of the Fenton Patches. The big rivers continue to improve with good barra being reported from the South and East Alligator Rivers. The mouth of Nourlangie Creek on the South Alligator is living up to its name as a big barra hot spot. The top of the Adelaide River has been very good with crews trolling the rock bars doing very well on slow trolled soft plastics. Blue salmon are around in numbers at the mouth of Buffalo Creek over the bottom of the tide and the first of the run in. Plenty of sand whiting along the Gunn Point beach along with some respectable flathead. Spanish mackerel and bluefin tuna on offer at East Point and Lee Point Reefs. Some nice mackies have been taken by crews anchoring up on the Bottlewasher and drifting WA Pillies down a burley slick. BBeesstt bbiitteess ffoorr tthhee wweeeekkeenndd JUST enough movement this weekend for a crack at the muddies in Darwin Harbour. Both morning tides should be pretty good. Use nice fresh bait and keep moving your pots around and you should head home with a nice feed. While you're soaking your pots, flick small prawn baits around the mangrove roots for a bream or two. Troll the rock bars on the Elizabeth River for a mangrove jack. CCrraabbbbeerrss CCoorrnneerr DARWIN Harbour has been producing some outstanding muddies with crabs to nearly 3kg showing up in the catches. Middle Arm Creeks have been very good but the word on the ground is just about every harbour creek is now worth a pot or 10. Shoal Bay has some very nice bucks on offer.
