The theme for this year's Occupational Therapy Week (OT Week) celebrations is OT: LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL. The key message from the week is that occupational therapy enables people to live life to its fullest by enhancing their ability live better with injury, illness or disability. Occupational therapists can be the difference between existing and living life to the full and making the best of each moment in life. OT Week, is a joint public awareness initiative of Occupational Therapists AUSTRALIA and its state and territory OT associations and will be staged from Sunday, October 25 through to Saturday, October 31. These state and territory associations, along with many local hospitals, community health services, private clinics, universities and government departments will hold various events across the country to promote and celebrate the important role of occupational therapy in the community. Occupational therapists also provide services to people whose ability to cope with day-to-day activities are impaired by illness, physical injury or psychological/social disability. Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network Dr Elspeth Macdonald said children of all ages are particularly vulnerable as disasters like bushfires can have a profound effect on their developmental trajectories and their social relationships. "The children affected by the Victorian bushfires have an even greater potential for adverse outcomes as a result of their degree of exposure to the death of loved ones in traumatic circumstances, as well as the losses they've endured with regards to their schools and communities," she said. Occupational therapy doesn't just treat medical conditions, it takes a holistic approach to health care, and helps people to stay engaged in activities that give them pleasure or a sense of purpose, despite challenges that may arise as a result of disasters. 13Sun Newspapers WEDNESDAY October 14 2009SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE 16 ls 11 /0 9 SUPPORTING OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY WEEK Congratulations to all Occupational Therapists.
