NT NEWS. 17 P U B : NTNE-WS-DA-TE:25-JGE:17 CO-LO-R: C-M Y-K Showhits nail on the head By HOLLY BYRNES T EARS have always been a key ingredient of the magic that is MasterChef. Julie Goodwin, the shows first winner, was a puddle most episodes, while last year the top 24 made headlines for crying too much. The emotional ride for contestants and viewers has bonded them in something close to a national support group. So to hear the waterworks are turned on in Tens new DIY series, The Renovators, is a good thing, says the shows host Brendan Moar. It was only when one hopeful broke down during a challenge making a simple coffee table that the seasoned TV presenter knew that this highly anticipated program had a pulse. It was so full-on and dramatic, so when one of them started to fall apart before our very eyes in the presentation moment, it was spectacularly compelling and nail-biting, Moar said. Comparisons with MasterChef have been inevitable, produced by the same team (now working for Shine Australia), who adapted the UK format to blockbuster ratings success. And there are similarities in The Renovators recipe. About to be launched into our living rooms are three TV unknowns in design, publisher Robyn Holt, architect Peter Ho and property developer Barry Du Bois, the series judges. Set over six nights a week, the reality series competition will feature team challenges and master classes. Up for grabs is the title of Australias best renovator, who must make the most profit from the sale of six properties to be made over around Sydney. Then theres the pantry, stocked with everything a landscaper, tradie or interior designer could lust after, all stored in a giant industrial hanger. And thats the the other thing about the show, its giant scale. Moar, a qualified landscape architect, has been a presenter on Foxtels Lifestyle channel. WATCH: The Renovators, 8.40pm,Monday, Channel 10
