Chief Minister Paul Henderson was to last night issue a statement last night inviting Katherine-born Cadel to the region. But he was beaten by several hours with Country Liberal party Leader Terry Mills saying he would ask Cadel to pop into the Territory. If he comes the NT News will ask which invitation he was accepting. Push for Cadels day off By DAVID WOOD NT News artist James Dunlevie muses on the impact Cadel Evans win might one day have on his old hometown of Katherine, NT PRIME Minister Julia Gillard did not come within a bulls roar of celebrating Australian world sporting glory as well as Bob Hawke did. While its hard to top the statement, Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum, she crushed the nations gushing feelings by ruling out a last minute public holiday today or ever. Bob Hawke made his claim after the early morning victory of Australia II in the the Americas Cup. But it was the 1980s. And he was wearing a ridiculous Australia suit. The Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson also refused to don the metaphorical Australia suit. ... I urge employers to be sympathetic towards their employees tomorrow morning who may display signs of having stayed up past their usual bedtimes, he said in a statement. Mr Gillard shut down the idea of Cadel day; the public holiday we want, need and deserve to celebrate Katherine born Cadel being the first Australian to ever win the Tour de France last night. But the bloke himself was a bit dismissive. Public holiday? Cadel said. If it doesnt hurt the economy, thats fine by me. Thanks Julia. I wont enter into any more political discussions there because its been a nice day so far. His wife, though, Chiara Passerini called for it. Aussies!! No work for u on Monday! And if bosses get angry, Ill have a word with them, she tweeted. She also asked for Australian citizenship for herself and all of Evans BMC team members. Ms Gillard said she interrupted Cadels bath, sharing a joke about his impact on the economy. I suggested that he wasnt doing much good for national productivity because everyone was coming to work bleary-eyed, she said. He suggested people would feel so full of morale theyd be cantering into work and working harder. So Im not in a position to announce a public holiday. Katherine Town Council mayor Anne Shepherd liked the holiday idea. Jolly good idea. A bit frivolous maybe, she said. Relive the moment TERRITORIANS can catch up on Cadel Evans victory at this years Tour de France with a special feature on SBS tonight. Starting at 10pm, SBS will be looking back at Evans momentous campaign. Cadel Le Triomphe will start with the team time trial on stage two and include Cadels stage four win over Alberto Contador, his courageous efforts in the Alps and his magnificent individual time trial which saw him take the yellow jersey from Andy Schleck.
