The study began last year and focuses on three communities, including Kwale Kwale, 40km west of Alice Springs. CAT senior research and projects officer Andrew Crouch said the study was to gauge aspirations in terms of computers, especially where there has not been a lot of exposure. He said: The plan is to develop from this baseline towards providing facilities to those who have not been exposed to computers. What we discovered is that Aboriginal people in small communities are keen to have access to computers and the internet, and training on how to use them. C o m p u t e r a n d internet access is unusual for people living in outstations. Of the people interviewed, only six per cent had access to a computer at home. Mr Crouch said while literacy is a challenge in the interactive process, one-on-one mentoring was producing good results. He said: Computing experience ranges from young people who have had exposure at school, to older people who have never used a computer. While literacy and limited grasp of the English language is a challenge, environmental challenges like heat also come in, and facilities have to be quite robust. More than 45 people took part in the program. Most current internet access for residents in remote areas is through internet cafes, schools and occasionally in libraries most of which are outside their communities. Mr Couch said access to internet at home would mean a lot of opportunities for indigenous people. He said: The issues surrounding home use and access will be the focus of the later stages of the project. CAT teamed with Central Land Council and Swinburne University in undertaking the study. Other communities involved were Mungalawurru and Imangara in the Barkly. Mark Coffey, Lucy Stewart with the iPod, Tracey Brand and Lucys daughter Ellaby Kenneth. Clued-up Lucy wins iPod DETAILS of the $150 million Alice Springs Transformation Plan (ASTP) drew a constant stream of people to its display at the Alice Springs Show. While there, people had the chance to win an iPod by correctly answering questions about the plan. The winner was Lucy Stewart. ASTP executive director Mark Coffey, representing the Australian Government, and Tracey Brand, representing the NT Government, were on hand to answer questions. The plan, which kicked off in May 2009, has earmarked $100 million for improving housing and infrastructure in town camps, $25 million for social services and $25 million to relieve homelessness through additional managed support of short term accommodation fa cilities.
