Previously he used the expensive Coventry-Climax engine, but the Lotus Cortina used a twin-cam version of the Ford Kent block with Chapmans twin-cam head. At first they used a 997cc unit, but a year later switched to a 1499cc engine and then a larger-bore 1558cc version to compete in the 1.6 litre racing class. Chapman tricked up the suspension andwent for lightweight alloy panels tomake the car handle better. Ford built theMk 2 Lotus Cortina in its Dagenham factory from 1966. Lotus Cortinas havewon saloon car championships and rallies around theworld and continue to be strong contenders in historic championships. By MARK HINCHLIFFE To thinkwhat Chapman didwith a crappy el cheapo body QUITE by accident, Chris Kokkinis fell in love with Lotus Cortina racing cars. In the early 1980s, his father bought his five-year-older sister a two-door Cortina GT Mk 2, not knowing what he had bought. She had it for three years and then it was stolen, so she bought another car. A week later the GT was found. I was just turning 19 so that became my first car by default, the 46-year-old Sydney architect says. Kokkinis says the Cortina was really bad to drive. I couldnt align the wheels, but thats what got me into it, he says. I started fiddled around with it, taught myself to fix cars and got together with like-minded people, did some track work and got hooked. I ended up pulling it completely apart and won some trophies with it when it was restored. Thats when he began researching motorsport history and discovered the Lotus-built Cortinas. The dream was to buy a Lotus Cortina because Jim Clark and those other drivers were winning almost every event in Europe and America, he says. To think what Chapman did with a crappy el cheapo body. This was just a production touring car, but from there Lotus grew into a Formula One breed. It was also the first supercar of the modern-day era. In 1999 he bought a 1964 Cortina GT (the car that won Bathurst from 1963-65) for $5500. It was in pieces and is still in the process of being restored. It wasnt until 2007 that he bought his first Lotus Cortina, a 1965 Mk 1, for $55,000. I was just having a coffee and saw it for sale in a magazine. So I got on a plane for Perth the next day and bought it. The car had been restored and was in good nick, but Kokkinis has touched up the interior and worked on the gearbox. Its just a nice car. If you stand a few metres away, it looks good, he says. If it was any better I wouldnt drive it. In 2008 he bought his second Lotus Cortina, a 1967 Mk 2 he found in Melbourne, for $45,000. But the Mk 1 remains his favourite because it has such a comprehensive race history.
