28 Centralian Advocate, Tuesday, May 23, 2006 SPORTSPORT Stars at Memo TWO US college basketball stars will be helping the Memo juniors at training this week. Chris Sunberg and Hanna Zavecz will run the clubs training on Thursday and Saturday and be at the Alice Springs Memorial Club for an informal talk on Friday. Sunberg gained all-state selection for Montana for two yearswhile in high school. He was picked in the senior all-star side, the best 10 players in Montana. He attended the invitation Michael Jordan camp for four years. Due to injury, Sunberg gave up basketball and played American football for the University of Wyoming. Victorian Zavecz is a three-time AllAustralian Camp participant who went on to play forWyoming University. She was in the Cowgirls starting five in all 28 games. She finished the season averaging 14.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and is listed in the top 10 all-time single season blocked shots record. National honours CENTRALIAN Pat Skinner is the first Territorian to be selected for the Australian Budgerigar netball team. She leaves to manage the indigenous schoolgirls team in a tournament against twoNewZealand sides, theAustralia school girls, a team from Singapore and one from Pacifica, on Thursday. Skinner is on the Centralian Indigenous Sport Committee and has gone with the Alice Springs sides to the Charles Perkins Carnival since 2001. She said: I amover themoon to have the opportunity to go to an event of this calibre. I have had great support from work, Anglicare NT. This tournament is in Adelaide and I hope this will giveme a chance to go toNew Zealand with the team next year. Jade Parsons was selected in the shadow squad but did not get a call-up. Season opener THE Sandy Mostran Triples was a highly contested event at the Alice Springs Bowling Club on Saturday. Mostran was the first secretary and treasurer of the club when it was established in 1971. Fittingly, a large group of lawn bowlers turned out to participate in an eventnamed in his honour. While the afternoon of bowls proved to be an exciting competition, the winners were David Diamond, Barbara Newton and Neville McKay with a score of 2+27. Runners up were Jill Scott, Richard Newton and Margaret Fowler. The Sandy Mostran Triples marks the start of the winter season at the club with the Finke Mixed Pairs and The OBrien Fours, with up to $1000 in prizemoney, to start in early June. Both events are open to social bowlers with special encouragement prizes available for non-winning, participating teams. The club has free beginners sessions on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Big win VERDI shot to the top of the Southern Zone Premier League soccer table with a 10-1 win over Federal United on Sunday. TheReds leapfroggedUnited for top spot, handing Feds their first defeat of the season at Ross Park. Verdi boss Giovanni Morelli was mystified by Uniteds feeble form in the second half after taking the lead through Adrian McAdam in the 10th minute. It took a brilliant floating cross fromAlby Tilmouth and a surprising header from Paulo Morelli mid-way through the first period to get the Reds back into the game. Giovanni Morelli said: It was the goal to draw it one-all that kicked it off for us. After that we converted most our chances. Wemanaged tohold our form in the first half then when we scored three or four after the break they lost their heads. Vikings managed to reverse their own dismal form with their first win of the season, 2-1, over the Football Academy.
