Settle down. Its not Godzilla. Its Ducatis range-topping Monster 1100 EVO. Alison Fraser, marketing manager for NF Importers who import Ducati says the Monster 1100 EVO is expected to arrive later this month. Pricing will be announced closer to arrival, she says. The naked Monster range currently consists of five models from the learner-approved 659 ($12,990) to the 1100 S ($22,490). The Monster flagship is expected to cost considerably more as it will come standard with the Ducati Safety Pack, which includes ABS and Ducati Traction Control (DTC). The EVO is powered by the Desmodue Evoluzione 1079cc engine, which is the first twinvalve Ducati engine to achieve 100 horsepower (74.5kW). It has new cylinder heads, revised combustion chambers, new inlet and exhaust ports and a higher compression ratio of 11.3:1 which means they can go back to a single spark plug. The engine also has lighter crankcases and flywheel, and a self-servo oil clutch. Monster has been a fashion icon since it was designed by Miguel Angel Galluzzi in 1993. More than a quarter of a million Monsters have been sold in the past 18 years. However, it always appeared a bit messy when you got up close, thanks to plumbing that looked like an afterthought. In 2008, the cables were tucked away in a radical restyle that made it look much neater. The EVO looks even better now with a makeover featuring plenty of carbonfibre, a new ex haust system, narrower seat and 20mm higher handlebars. That new seat and handlebar configuration will make the riding position more upright and less fatiguing. It is fitted with 43mm Marzocchi USD forks, a Sachs off-set monoshock, Brembo brakes front and rear, plus sticky Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres. The Monster range will swell to six next month when the learner-legal 659 gets an ABS model costing from $13,990. All Ducatis come with a twoyear unlimited kilometre warranty and 24-hour roadside and emergency assist. Ford to produce tiny eco-engine By NEIL DOWLING EMISSION and fuel consumption regulations have spawned a tiny one-litre, three-cylinder engine that Ford plans to fit to its Fiesta and Focus. Ford claims the direct-injection turbocharged engine, developed in the UK and shown in its Fiesta-sized concept B-Max at the Geneva Motor Show this year, will equal or better the power output of its current four-cylinder engines. The engine is part of Fords revitalised push into new technologies to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Fuel-saving features of the little engine, which will be built at plants around the world, include an offset crankshaft, a split cooling system that allows the block to heat quicker than the cylinder head, an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head and dual variable camshaft timing. Other Ford developments include an eightspeed automatic transmission for larger cars and an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT) for use in its hybrid vehicle rollout. The company says it plans to launch five electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States by 2012 and in Europe by 2013. It says that electric and hybrid vehicles may account for as much as 25 per cent of Ford sales by 2020.
