Opinion & letters Sydney needs intervention, not Alice Sir , - A s a resident o f A l ice Springs m y recent ho l i day that ended in S y d n e y also ended in disgust. . Y o u H a v e p r o b a b l y heard that indigenous pub l ic 'alcohol consumpt ion in A l i c e Springs was chronic , w i t h residents and tourists in "fear". U rgen t action was tak en; d ry t o w n laws , huge signs as y o u enter t o w n , increased pol ice p o w e r s , f ines , t a k e - a w a y a lcohol r e s t r i c t i o n s , no n e w l i cences and n o w mandatory scanned photo I D for e v e r y purchase. Spend an hour in S y d ney on F r i d a y or Saturday night and y o u wonder , w h y all the fuss over 100 odd publ icaly drunk indigenous people w h o m the pol ice k n o w by name. I saw thousands o f peo ple, so drunk they staggered f r o m bottle shops s w i g g i n g back their next purchase. Bottles o f hard spirits littered the pavement, fights, v o m i t and public ur inat ion. N o police. S y d n e y is Aust ra l i a 's face to the w o r l d and what is on show? H e a d l i n e s c o m e to m i n d : " A n a t i o n a l d i s grace", "alcohol abuse r a m pant" or " c r a c k d o w n , extra police required". O n the train, downstairs was v o m i t and rubbish, up stairs drunken people. I asked a g u y w h o was casually smoking " Is this n o r m a l " , he r e s p o n d e d , " Y e a h , y o u can dr ink nearly a n y w h e r e and take-away is cheaper than clubs". I researched the coun ci l 's response to the situa t ion; some streets are des ignated A l c o h o l Free Zones ( A F Z ) . O n l i n e recogni t ion o f the issue dates back five years, yet the recommenda tions are focused on l icens ing and not public alcohol consumpt ion. A n extensive 2007 re port by Cur t in U n i v e r s i t y on the sale and supply o f alcohol details actions and legislation f r o m all states, N S W is c o n s p i c u o u s l y absent. I f A l i c e Spr ings was a "national disgrace" then what is Sydney? Perhaps an international disgrace requir ing riot po lice and drastic action? H o w could something so public attract no atten tion? I could on ly see t w o differences: It was t w o orders o f magnitude worse , and T h e r e were no indig enous Austral ians. KANGAROO HAZARDS Please be mindful of steadily increasing kangaroo numbers throughout town, and take extra care when on our roads. Kurrajong dve, Burke st, and the Golf Course area are particularly affected. Council Depot teams are working to install reminder signage throughout problem areas. AT THE LIBRARY... Sydney needs an emer gency intervent ion. It 's in crisis. C y S t a r k m a n A l i c e S p r i n g s S i r , - W h a t the hell is w r o n g w i th e v e r y member o f the A l i c e Springs T o w n Counci l? H a v e they all got their heads stuck so far in the sand in the T o d d R i v e r that they cannot see the absolute mess o f litter congregating in our quiet l i tt le back streets? Shame on y o u . W h a t . d o the tourists think w h e n they stroll about and witness the disgraceful disgusting mess? A n d another thing, ap prox imate ly 20 days ago I w i t n e s s e d m o r e l i t ter , this t ime direct ly opposite the entrance to the A l i c e Springs Police watch house including confidential pa perwork obv ious ly not been through the shredder. M y c o n c e r n w a s so great that I telephoned po l ice c o m m i s s i o n e r Sean Parnell . H e was v e r y approach able and pleasant to the task. M u c h to m y fr iend's and m y dismay as we took an en joyable wa lk to the beauti ful T o d d Mal l Markets, alas five days later that rubbish was still there, in ful l v i e w ot^the public and of course the tourists. Is there not a code o f pr ivacy w h e n it comes d o w n to one person's G o d g iven right to expect documents of a confidential matter to remain confidential? A l i c e S p r i n g s T o w n C o u n c i l , pleaseextract y o u r heads f rom the sand and re m o v e those rose coloured glasses. G e o r g e T h o m p s o n A l i c e S p r i n g s Sir,-1 am saddened that y o u w o u l d g ive the ludi crous ravings o f " M i l l i o n Dol lar a year Dentist?" such a big headline. It beggars bel ief that somebody [would ] translate a procedural fee o f $400 into mi l l ion dollar earnings. Theprocedure mayhave on ly taken half an hour but what about the paperwork - or do y o u think they just commit y o u to m e m o r y ? Factor that in and w e have already reduced y o u r [letter w r i t e r ' s ] e x a g g e r ated c la im. A n d then y o u have as sumed e v e r y patient turns up o reven gets the same pro cedure? I f y o u attribute a real value to the dental assistant and receptionist there goes the 80 grand y o u so mag nan imous ly stated w o u l d cover A L L overheads. O r did y o u real ly think they were o n l y wor th $5 an hour - n o w there's y o u r headline. A n d n o w f rom what 's left o f this already rapidly reduced figure they have to c o v e r proper ty rental , dental equipment, materi als, serv ic ing o f equipment, accounting, staff training, etc, etc. A n d of course y o u ne glected to mention the big c o s t - T A X . B y m y c a l c u l a t i o n s - w h i c h are a little more realistic - the income this p r o f e s s i o n a l is e a r n i n g barely justi f ies the years and years o f training taken to.achieve it!.. , : A n d y o u w o n d e r w h y w e have a chronic shortage o f dentists? Y o u r attitude is yet an other reason not to w o r k in A l i c e . So stop reminding pro fessionals w h y they don't need to w o r k here and be c o n s t r u c t i v e in adver t is ing w h y they should. M y praise and admiration to the dentist w h o showed incred ible restraint by not w i r i n g y o u r j a w when they had the chance. C h r i s t i n e F r e e m a n A l i c e S p r i n g s S i r , - I read the letter t i tled " M i l l i o n Dol lar a Y e a r Dentists?" w i t h interest. I, too,, am stunned by the charges charged b y den tists here. I went to see a dentist here for a check-up after wait ing three months for an appointment. T h e k ind o f treatment I received was - wa lk into the dentist's r o o m , sat on the chair, the dentist had a peek o f the gap between m y molars, wrote me a note for an x - r a y and sent me out of the room - essentially less than three minutes! A n d the c h a r g e - $ 5 5 ! I was stunned and told the recept ionist that the dentist did not even look at m y teeth (he on ly had a peek at the gap between m y molars) . She said it was an e x amination o f m y teeth. W h a t examination? I can't bel ieve dentists here can just have a quick peek and charge $55! I dread to think what the charges are for fillings ( I n o w k n o w f rom the arti cle) and root canal. I ' ve n o w g i v e n up on dentists here. 1 w o u l d rather buy a cheap airfare on T i g e r and fly d o w n to Melbourne to see a dentist, A N D get to do some shopping as w e l l . R a f i z a h R a s h i d A l i c e S p r i n g s S i r , - I w o u l d l ike to make to make m y vo ice heard. W e had a table f o r us, ordered the entree, w e w e r e h a v i n g some beers and I went to-the bar to buy one more beer, in the mean t ime m y w i f e was expel led f r o m the table, because the w a i t e r wan ted the table for other customers. She didn't quite under stand what the waiter said, i f y o u can call that a waiter. T h e n he in the most rude manner possible asked her to get up and leave, he was screaming at m y w i f e . ... - S o . t h e n I t h i n k , w e went to the bar to celebrate, eat something, have a f e w beers, and I end up w i t h m y w i f e c ry ing , I spoke to the manager that night and he did nothing to help or c o m pensate us or whatever . W e l l , i f the tables were reserved for diners and I h a v e o r d e r e d and eaten the entree already I think that make us diners, or am I w r o n g ? A l i c e Springs is such a n ice p lace , w i t h n ice people, it's a shame that w e had such bad service in that place, i tmay happen to more tourists; and that's not good for A l i c e Springs. A n d r e C a r v a l h o A l i c e S p r i n g s Bojangles r e p l i e d : T h e staff member i n v o l v e d has r e c e i v e d a f ina l n o t i c e . Straight after the event he real ized he was w a y out of line. A n d r e has been of fered a ful l re fund w h i c h he declined. I am hoping they W i l l . drop into B o ' s tonight, at least for a beer, and to meet them personally. A s I said to A n d r e , thanks for br inging this complaint to m y atten tion so it can be addressed. I on ly wish, we could have shown them our best. C h r i s V a u g h a n . S i r , - A l i c e Springs al derman and Labor staffer J o h n R a w n s l e y on local ra dio last week declared his support for uranium min ing and yes , a mult i storey car park in our C B D . W h y not go all the w a y J o h n g o for a roof- top ca sino combined .with a w a v e pool? W i t h the m o n e y that goes w i th the "uran ium g i ant" Cameco-Paladin c o m ing to t o w n , surely anything is possible. Y o u do not need to be a s k y d i v e r to appreciate our region 's beauty. T h i s is being sacrificed by T e r r i t o r y L a b o r w i t h thei'r atavistic push to al low for the A n g e l a Pamela explorat ion just 20 miles south o f the A l i c e . I predict that the con stant tr ickle of pro uranium v i e w s w i l l n o w turn into a r ivermindless obedience all the w a y f rom t o w n counci l to D a r w i n w i th the notable except ion o f Jane Clark . I refer to our elected members and not the pub l ic 's opin ion. T h e uranium miners o f course w i l l be laughing all the w a y to the bank. O u r fami ly w o u l d l ike this opportunity to say wake up J o h n , wake up T e r r i t o r y Labor , w a k e up Chr is Nat l . It is our env i ronment too. D a v i d C h e w i n g s A l i c e S p r i n g s I'm not qualified for 21st century T h e t y r a n n y o f d is tance w e all feel l i v ing i n A l i c e S p r i n g s is a constant t h r e a t to o u r menta l sta b i l i t y . O f ten I w i l l find m y s e l f hitting the "get m a i l " but ton on m y email a little too often just to see i f there is news f r o m out o f t o w n . O f ten I w i l l find m y s e l f d r i v ing the long w a y round to a fr iend's place just to make it feel l ike I l ive in s l igh t ly bigger place. I cannot imagine the l i fe o f Centra l ians f r o m times past. T h e isolation must h a v e been in to ler able. Inescapable and ever present. C a n . y o u imagine what it was like? O n one o f . o u r particularly nasty summer days, no te levis ion, no ra dio, and no regu- . lar n e w s f r o m anywhere . It hurts me to imagine. W e complain sometimes about the avai labi l i ty o f i n f o r m a t i o n f o r people f r o m other places in A u s t r a l ia. No. C h a n n e l 10, no fast inter net i f y o u happen to l i v e a shor t wa lk f rom t o w n , and y o u have to wait unti l lunchtime to get the Sunday papers. A l l o f these gripes are va l id but w h e n put up against the slings and ar rows o f l ife jn the Centre past they seem a little petty. T e c h n o l o g y has thank fu l l y brought us closer to the w o r l d . T h e internet and mobile phones mean that w e can contact loved ones the w o r l d over . I have just d iscovered Facebook. F o r those o f y o u blessed enough notto k n o w , Facebook is one o f the mas s ive "socia l n e t w o r k i n g " sites on the internet. So far as I can discern, F a c e b o o k has t w o m a i n functions. F i rs t ly to keep in contact w i th people for w h o m y o u w o u l d other wise not have the t ime and secondly to hunt d o w n high schoo l sweethear ts . T h e second funct ion is a little dangerous i f y o u go online a little t ipsy. C o m p a r e d to . y e s t e r year, the amount o f var ious devices w e can use to c o m municate w i t h anyone w e want anywhere w e want is staggering. C a n y o u imag ine t ry ing to expla in it all to Stuart and Giles, and co? I d o n ' t want * y o u to th ink for a moment that I ' m a 'Luddite . I t 's not that I don' t l ike or bel ieve in this technology. I n fact I think it can be fantastic. I t 's just that sometimes I don' t feel qualif ied. T h i s w e e k either the w o r l d has conspired against me or I ' v e conspired against myse l f . D o y o u ever have those weeks where y o u feel u n qual i f ied to be a part, o f s o c i e t y ? T h i s had been such a week. H o w a m I able to take m y part in this brave n e w w o r l d o f F a c e b o o k s and M y s p a c e s a n d 3Gs w h e n I can't g e t m y w a t c h to tell the r ight date? I h a v e a watch. I t 's a nice w a t c h m y dear mother gave me for Christmas. It is self w i n d i n g so i f y o u don't Wear the watch for a couple o f days it stops. T h i s is no problem. A l l one has to do is set the time and date and away y o u go . E x c e p t that for the life o f me I cannot get this watch to tell the right date. I set it and 20 minutes later the date has changed. A m I that c lue less? Should I be able to wa lk the streets o f this t o w n w i th the normal people? T h e watch isn't the on ly instance o f m y ineptitude either. N e v e r ask m e to record a television program for y o u . B y the l ime I figure out w h i c h remote I need to use and h o w to change the television f r o m Channel 6 to A V , they ' l l be screening the Christmas special o f the programme y o u asked me to record. T h e 21 s t Cen tury has so m u c h to offer. N e v e r before in the history o f humani ty have I had so m u c h at m y finger tips. N o w i f on ly I could get the b loody ma chine to w o r k . i&SgsB&b Australian Government Do you need help to stay at home?
