J o h n "Sassy" Sinclair and G r a h a m Fel ton set out f rom Sydney on M a y 17 and returned on M o n d a y , t w o months later, on theirtrusted 1940 U model Har ley D a v idson w i t h side box . B a c k i n 1958theymade the j o u r n e y t h r o u g h the gruel l ing summer , leaving S y d n e y on B o x i n g D a y and returning in the early weeks o f February . T h i s year 's was "a c o m pletely different t r ip" , says M r Fe l ton . , A p a r t f r o m d o i n g it in the coo ler months , in 1958, west o f Hughenden in Queensland, they could ride f o r a day or t w o at a t ime wi thout seeing anyone. T h i s was diff icult , e v e n dangerous, w h e n the bike broke d o w n , as it did some where east o f F r e w e n a , a l i t t le roadhouse be tween C a m o o w e a l a n d T h r e e W a y s that has since disap peared. T h e heat on the treeless p la in w a s "pene t ra t ing" , their water was contami nated, t h e y both became dehydrated. "It was a bit o f a w o r r y , " says M r Fe l ton . I n 2008 the dangercame f r o m different quarters: the roads are sealed, people do h igh speeds, there are grey nomads e v e r y w h e r e . T h e pair used their latest adventure to raise aware ness about A l z h e i m e r ' s , a special concern for M r Fe l ton since caring for his mother , w h o suffered f r o m the disease. Funds raised on the tour, estimated b y M r Fe l ton to be some $7000, w i l l go to the U n i v e r s i t y o f S y d n e y ' s A g e i n g and A l z h e i m e r ' s Research Foundat ion.
