The event attracted 89 entrants, with athletes from Australia, Macau, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. The race record of 1hr 10mins 06secs was set in 1995 by champion Darwin athlete Stephen Blake, who was at the event but didnt compete due to injury. Running in near-perfect conditions around the 21.1km track, Defence Force marathon runner Richard Gardner crossed the finish line ahead of colleague Tony Craig and Philippines middle distance athlete Mendel Lopez. Gardiner trailed Craig for most of the race but took the lead at 16km and crossed in the impressive time of 1:11:41. I didnt really run to a plan. I just stuck with the leading group up until the 14km mark when one of the guys took off, he said. So I followed him out and passed him at 16km, and managed to hang on. My best half (marathon) was a tick over 1hr 10mins, so Im pretty happy with my time. Im mainly a marathon runner and the Gold Coast is next on the agenda for me, but I enjoy the half and do two or three every year . Bronze medallist Lopez who is from Cebu Provence in the Philippines, competed in the 5km and 10km events at Arafura in 2007. I couldnt compete in the half-marathon in 2007, but this time I came to compete and Im very happy with the bronze medal, he said. The winner of the womens race was Jodie Barker (ADF) in a time of 1:26:40, ahead of Darwins Hanna Johnston. Barker has had a busy time at the Games and said it was a relief to finish in front of the pack for a change. I did the triathlon last Sunday and came third overall, she said. I finished second in both the 5km and 10km on Tuesday and Wednesday, so to finally win gold is awesome, she said. This is my third Arafura Games. Last time I ran third, but my time today was nearly two-minutes quicker, and the cool conditions helped a great deal.
