Applies to units sold and installed before 31 May 2011 City turns to eco lights The new Vertical Axis Wind Turbines are ideal for commercial and residential use UrbanWind Power Australia is the local distributor of the hybrid streetlights, which aremanufactured in theUS byUrbanGreen Energy DARWIN City Council has bought hybrid solar-wind-powered streetlights to install at East Point. Not only will the solar-wind-powered streetlights be saving money on long-term power bills, but installation costs associated with laying cables will be eliminated. Urban Wind Power Australia is the local distributor of the hybrid streetlights, which are manufactured in the US by Urban Green Energy. Urban Wind Power Australia director Peter McGrath said the installation process was based on simple principles. You take it out there, put it in the ground and theres your power, he said. The wind power company also is promoting its other environmentally friendly product Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. Most people associate wind turbines with big wind farms but these target an urban market, Mr McGrath said. But the new Vertical Axis Wind Turbines, which are developed in America, are perfect for commercial and residential use. Developed in 2008, they incorporate the latest technology and are built to the highest-quality standards. All of the turbines have undergone certification to International Electrotechnical Commission standards, which far exceed the standards for the small wind industry. Urban Wind Power Australia is looking at getting the wind turbines into as many new homes as possible. They are very quiet, Mr McGrath said. He said that with the new carbon tax expected to have a negative impact on power prices, homes and businesses that were able to produce their own power would make substantial savings. Mr McGrath said the wind turbines would complement solar power and there was the option of pumping power back into the grid. They are suitable for remote locations as they are able to support and reduce the reliance on generator-supplied power. The companys other clients include Darwin LNG Plant, a grape farm in Kerang and a new settlement on the Barkly Plateau. It has also distributed the products to other states in Australia. Urban Wind Power Australia is a Territory-based company with distributors in Brisbane and Melbourne. Its directors have been residents of the Northern Territory since 1980.
