As engineers, our training was designed to support the infantry in the field, Eddie says. We specialised in tunnel searching, mine and booby trap detection and destruction, demolition by use of explosives and other devices and construction work. His last role in Vietnam was at Fire Support Base Coral during the Tet Offensive of 1968. At Coral, our position was so dire that I had actually given up hope of ever seeing Australia again. So every day I have lived from that time to now has been a bonus. Eddie remains in contact with old comrades. Vietnam meant that we did something that was special and unique in our lives. Unfortunately, we are all getting older and every year more and more of us pass on.
