As exclusively first revealed in the NT News on Monday, Elli Vukasovic, 28, was crowned the inaugural 2011 MGM Grand World Dream Calendar Model Search winner on Saturday night in Las Vegas. The down-to-earth Darwin glamour girl edged out 69 beauties from all over the globe and picked up $10,000 for her efforts. Ms Vukasovic said with the scope her new title would bring she would be telling the rest of the world all about the wonders of the NT. Ive had quite a few interviews and always tell people how awesome the Territory is, she said. Id like to make a special mention to all the support on Facebook and my Darwin sponsors Me & My Llama and Pearl Galleria. The announcement came as a shock to Ms Vukasovic, who at 28 felt like she was a little older than most winners. She said the awards ceremony was very Vegas and included trapeze artists and dancers. She said it had been a whirlwind few days with offers of all sorts flooding in. Ive been asked to join radio talk shows, to discuss hosting on television and to enter other pageants, she said. And will our Elli consider these offers? Right now, not a chance. Its home sweet home for me. Bargain home buying in Tiwi By DAVID WOOD THE suburb of Tiwi is the place to buy in Darwin, a new property report says. RP Data described the suburb as a hotspot because it was next to the waterfront and the Royal Darwin Hospital and close to shopping centres and Charles Darwin University. The St George Bank national hotspots property report is prepared by analysts RP Data. St George chief economist Besa Deda said the report identified attractive property for investment based on factors including house values in surrounding suburbs, the level of local amenities and the demographic mix. Ms Deda said a large proportion of the highlighted suburbs presented renovation potential, were close to amenities such as shopping centres, schools and public transport, and were more affordable compared with surrounding suburbs. The reports puts the average house price in Tiwi at $483,250 with price growth of 7.4 per cent in the past 12 months. LJ Hooker Parap real estate agent Jan Hallagan said she agreed that Tiwi was a hotspot because the price was lower on average than surrounding suburbs such as Lyons and Brinkin, and it was a short walk to Casuarina Beach. There are a lot of bargains, she said. It is a great place for investors or first-home buyers. She said there were still houses for under $450,000, including one of her recent sales a renovators delight for $435,000 on land worth $380,000. Every now and then you get a suburb that for no real reason is a bargain, she said. A lot of ex-Housing Commission homes are coming up for sale and theyre great. They rent well because of the location. For return on investment it is great. Police call back-up for Alice Springs footy carnival POLICE have called for back-up to handle the Ngurratjuta Easter Football Carnival in Alice Springs this weekend. Forty night-patrol officers will be brought into the desert town from remote communities. Thousands of visitors are expected to travel to Alice Springs over the Easter weekend for the three-day carnival, which will be held at Traeger Park oval. Senior Sergeant Peter Dash said the patrols would provide a welcome support to police in dealing with the big influx of people. This is a great example of the benefit of a co-ordinated community approach to ensuring the successful management of such a large event, he said. Proposal to manage displaced AN influx of people from the Northern Territory town of Yuendumu to Adelaide last year has sparked national agreement to form a scheme for managing displaced people crossing state lines. Families and Communities Minister Jennifer Rankine took the proposal to a ministers meeting in Perth yesterday. While the SA Government made every effort to help the people fleeing violence last year, we would like to see protocols established so in the event this happens again the Government can be more prepared, Ms Rankine said.
