83 OUR PEOPLE Our people are our most important asset and we value their contribution towards making DCIS a successful organisation. We aim to achieve this by ensuring all staff are aware of and committed to our corporate direction and have the opportunity to participate in goal setting at the Business Unit and individual level. We ensure that our organisational values are reflected in all work policies and practices, by encouraging active staff involvement in creating a positive working environment and effective communication, and fostering career development, flexible work practices, diversity and a safe and a healthy work environment. Key Performance Indicators 2003/04 2002/03 2001/02 Staff satisfaction 76% 70% 74% Personal development plans completed 74% 71% 88% Staff turnover 35% 33% New workers compensation claims 10 10 9 Sick leave days per person 9.1 11.4 11.7 Recreation leave days per person 24.5 27.5 27.4 Long Service Leave days per person 4.3 5.1 5.7 Working for Excellence Working for Excellence continues to be the theme by which we promote our human resource and development programs within DCIS. Workforce Planning A strategic human resource plan has been developed to maintain a workforce, which is more appropriately matched to our business requirement. The plan identifies the following five key result areas, which are aimed at developing focussed, competent and motivated staff: Right person in the right job; Build and enhance people capability; High performance teams; Retain talent; and Increase workplace diversity. The strategies used to achieve our key result areas follow. Succession Management Of the 54 senior managers within DCIS, 43 are over the age of 40. This statistic identified the need to prepare and develop staff for higher level positions. To this end, a consultant was engaged to assist with succession management. Two workshops, facilitated by Alan Bandt, were conducted and aimed at developing a succession management strategy. There is still much to do before this strategy is put into action but we are confident the strategy will result in retainment of staff, build capability and develop the organisations future leaders.
