Power and Water environment manager Randall Scott said the corporation has to lead by example because it expects Territorians to be more environmentally friendly. Weve got to be an example, he said. He said the Mitsubishi i-Miev can travel for 140km on a fully charged battery, which takes four to seven hours to charge and costs an average of $6 worth of electricity a week. He said Power and Water is trialling the car to see how it meets its transport needs and if all goes well, it may put a few more on the roads. They will probably form a small percentage of our fleet, Mr Scott said. The car will be seen around town suitably decked in Melaleuca Awards signage as a reminder to be environmentally aware. The signage on the car fits in with the launch of the annual awards which recognise environmental excellence. The new awards section will also look at how photographers capture environmentally sustainable practices. Coin collection stolen THIEVES are on the run with a rare note and coin collection, worth $11,700. The break-in allegedly happened at a house in Katherine South between last Monday and Sunday. It is believed 50 unique notes, a rare Sydney 2000 Millennium coin collection and a watch were stolen. Anyone with information is urged to phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Hit for cans payout protest By DAMIEN McCARTNEY THE body campaigning against the proposed Cash for Containers scheme has taken a hit in its own poll. A telephone survey of 1100 Territorians by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) revealed last week 73 per cent of Territorians agree with the scheme, with 22 per cent against. The survey also revealed 47 per cent listed the cost of living as their top concern. Crime (17 per cent), health and hospitals (12 per cent), environment (10 per cent), and education and schools (7 per cent) also are at the forefront of Territorians minds. AFGC chief executive Kate Carnell defended the survey, and said support would not be so high if the Government had released figures outlining costings. We doubt whether the support would have been that high if the Government had released the costings for the scheme, showing that Territorians would end up pay ing for the expensive administration and infrastructure costs across the NT, she said. The survey showed 43 per cent of those surveyed thought the scheme was expensive. Ms Carnell said the government must come clean on the first day of Parliament sittings and outline how much the legislation will cost. Industry alliance Responsible Recycling is urging people to contact their local MP to raise concerns about the issue and ask their MP not to support the legislation. The Responsible Recycling Coalition involves several leading organisations including the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC), Australian Hotels Association NT, Chamber of Commerce NT and the Liquor Stores Association NT. The survey revealed 47 per cent strongly agreed with the legislation, 26 per cent agreed somewhat, 10 per cent somewhat disagreed, 12 per cent strongly disagreed, and 6 per cent were not sure.
