Chelsea lands Torres Supporters burn a Liverpool jumper displaying Fernando Torres name after it was confirmed the Spanish star had joined Chelsea CHELSEA has confirmed the signing of Spanish striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool in an $80.3 million deal that shattered the British transfer record. Torres signed a five-and-ahalf-year contract with the English Premier League champion, which announced the deal 35 minutes after the official close of the January transfer window. The 26-year-olds transfer smashed the previous British record set less than an hour earlier when Liverpool paid Newcastle $56.21 million to sign England striker Andy Carroll as Torress replacement. Torres, who has won the World Cup and European Championships with Spain, had asked to leave Liverpool on Friday when news of Chelseas first bid for the striker became public knowledge. Liverpool rejected that request, but Blues owner Roman Abramovich was determined to sign the star and the Anfield club eventually accepted Chelseas huge offer after securing Carrolls signature. Torres, who scored seven times in seven games against Chelsea, was keen to leave Liverpool after the club slumped out of the Champions League last season. McLeod blocked Andrew McLeod FOOTBALL ByGREYMORRIS WARATAHS bold attempt to get dual Adelaide premiership player Andrew McLeod into a red and white jumper has been shirtfronted by an NTFL by-law. Under a nationwide AFL ruling, former NTFL players delisted by their AFL clubs are automatically reregistered with their former sides. NTFL registrar Michael Barfoot told the NT News last night any playing comeback by former Darwin Buffalo McLeod in another jumper would have to wait until 2012. When a player is delisted by the AFL, he reverts back to his original club, Barfoot said. Andrew wont be able to get a clearance from Buffs because they closed on November 1. McLeod played his last game in the NTFL competition in March, 1994 when he was Darwins best player in the grand final loss to St Marys. His presence for Tahs against St Marys in Sundays top five clash at Gardens Oval would have dragged thousands of fans through the gate.
