RATIONALE ACID COV,NEOJTS J7 BILLABONG:- This billabong is on J7 Creek which drains into Nagele Creek upstream of Ja Ja Billabong. It was intended to indicate oollution derived froo the planned ?ancontinental proce~sing area, however other sites need to be added in this a~ea as this site does not completely achieve the objective. Although the waterhole nay be permanent, water is not p~ese~t all year at the sam9ling site. I I I 1 I I This site was first sav.9led by ~10 SS in December, 1978 I (first flow). Ko vnw a::1alysis was carried out. The gauge board was installed in Nove~ber, 1978. GEORGETO\'iN BILLABONG:- This is a backflmv billabong on Georgetown Creek, adjacent to Magela Creek. It is used to detect any ?Ollution fro~ Georgetown Creek which runs very close to the Ranger tailings dam and the pipeline corridor to the tailings dam. It contains water throughout the year and may have a eutrophic tendency towards the end of the dry season. This site was fi::.-st sa:n?led by \\;D SS in November, 1978 as reco=ended by the 1978 Jabiru ;,'ior:<:shop. It was sampled by I'IRB frocn February, 1971 to July, 1972. The gauge board was installed in October, 1978. Some ~".EC samples were taken in the billabong. COONJIMBA 3ILLABO~G:- This is a backflow billabong on Coonjimba Creek, which runs through the Ranger project area. The creek has been diverted by the construction of the tailings da~ a::1d is da~~ed to form retention oond No. 1. It ~av detect oollution from the tailinSs da8, light induStrial area or Ranger townsite before reaching :1agela Creek. It nor:nally contains water throughout the year and may tend to become eutrophic towards the end of the d~y season. This site was first s~"pled by WD SS in Kovenber, 1978 as reco""-nended by the 19 7 8 Jabiru 11orkshop. It ,;as sampled by "IRa f::-on April, 1972 to November, 1972. The gauge board was installed in October, 1978. Sone ~~EC samples were take~ in the billabong.
