I I I I I I I I I I 4 I' PROJECT BRIEF PROJECT TITLE SOCIAL/ECOLOGICAL STUDY OF FLOODING AT ALICE SPRINGS BACKGROUND Much of Alice Springs is located on the floodplain of the Todd River, and parts of the town are subject to reasonably regular inundation. Alice Springs is a rapidly growing town, and there are pressures to develop within the land liable to flooding, and even on the floodway. The best way to ensure that this floodplain (both within the Town, and in the Farm Areal is developed in a manner which is compatible with the flood hazard and to ensure that flooding problems will not be made vor is by the application of a Floodplain Management Plan. The elements and component projects of the proce leading to the Plan are described elsewhere (broad timetable at Attachement 11. This study is thus an essential step in the development of a Floodplain Management Plan for Alice Springs. In parallel with project 2033 Flood Damage Study, evaluation of indirect damages and the social and ecological impacts of flooding are required so that the likely benefits from various mitigation options can be assessed.
