Most aquifers are less than 100m below the ground surface and many are within 30m. RN 2027, the existing Pigeon Hole windmill bore, intercepted 1 L/s of potable water at a maximum depth of 30m. This aquifer was probably friable quartz sandstone beneath basalt, though no geological log is available. 3. RESULTS Bore 27617 was drilled to a total depth of 37m and encountered in excess of 4 Lis of potable water in friable quartz sandstone between 19 and 37m. The sandstone was overlain by basalt to the surface. The bore was constructed with steel casing and inline stainless steel screens between 28.29 and 30.33m (see Composite Log of Bore). Water quality results from a sample taken during pump testing are included in Table 1. This bore yielded bicarbonate water within potable limits (AWRC and NHMRC, 1987). The waters are non-corrosive, however moderately high hardness values indicate that scaling of plumbing fixtures and increased soap consumption may occur. The minimum requirement of 0.5 Lis of potable water for a population of 40 people (based on 1000 L/c/d) is easily met by RN 27617. 4. RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that ' 005bRS a pump setting of 25m and a pumping rate not in excess of 4 L/s be adopted at RN 27617; absorption trenches and septic tanks should not be constructed within 100m radius of the bore; further recommendations for bore equipping are included in the Test Reports (see Attachments).
