Abstract

Mary Ann Dam, 5km north of Tennant Creek, is named after Mary Ann Mine which was owned by Nugget Wilson and Harold Williams. They named the mine after their daughters Mary Jean and Wendy Ann. The Dam was completed in April 1980 and filled for the fIrst time in January 1981. On April 24, 1981, the Dam was officially opened by the Hon. Ian Tuxworth MLA Barkly. Built as a recreational lake for the Tennant Creek community, it is the only lake used solely for recreation in arid Australia. When full, the dam has a surface area of 18ha, a volume of 450000 m3 (1 m3 = 1000 litres) and a maximum depth of 7 metres. This report, based on data collected by Water Resources Division between March 1981 and December 1993, discusses the factors influencing the water quality of Mary Ann Dam. It will help the Tennant Creek community better understand and manage the Dam effectively,
