3. COMPARISON OF 1957 RECORD AND 1984 MODEL RESULTS Figure 3 (a) shows the recorded 1957 levels, together with levels derived from SMEC's study, for the 100 year and 50 year floods. The "Modelled" levels were obtained from runs of SMEC' s version of the Model, carried out by the Department, and vary slightly from the levels given in SMEC's report (SMEC 1984). As Figure 3(a) shows, the 1957 level is very close to the 100 year level at the Railway Bridge and at the hospital. On the right bank flood plain the difference is about 0.10 m. On the left bank flood plain, the 100 year level is 0.35 m above 1957 upstream of the railway and 0.80 m above 1957 downstream. The SMEC Model was initially calibrated on the 1968 flood which was almost entirely confined to the river. Further adjustments were made to obtain some measure of agreement between the 50 year levels and the 1957 record on the left bank flood plain. The 50 year flood was used, as the peak flow of 5220 m3 /s was of the same order of magnitude as the then estimated peak flow in 1957. No comparison appears to have been made between the 50 and 100 year modelled river levels and 1957 river levels. Such a comparison would have shown that the 100 year profile was much closer to the 1957 than the 50 year. Figure 3(b) shows the 50 year, 100 year and recorded 1957 profiles, upstream of the bridge.
