Unfortunately it was not possible to obtain as close agreement \.,i th the upstream and downstream levels. As shown on Figure 4.3(b), the modelled flood gradient is generally below the recorded levels. Attempts to correct this discrepancy led to errors in level and/or flow at the gauging station. As the upstream and downstream levels were based on surveyed flood marks, more emphasis was placed on matching the GS record. 4.4 Flood plain Calibration using the 1957 Flood Initially a trial 1957 inflow hydrograph was applied to the model, without any change from the 1984 run. The hydrograph was then adjusted until the stage record at the bridge was reproduced. Flood plain roughness was then varied to give as close an approximation as possible to the recorded levels. No changes were, however, made at any section where flow occurred in the 1984 flood. DME2:57
