This report details results of integrated radon measurements taken in and around five houses at Alice Springs. Radon concentrations were measured in reticulated water supplies, household rooms and outdoor air. The reticulated water supply and bathroom air of two houses in Santa Teresa were also measured. The possible significance of the water supply as a source of indoor atmospheric radon is discussed. Recommendations for further reticulated water supplies discussed. sampling and implications for in the Northern Territory are discussed.

I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Radon is rarely in radioactive equilihrium with its short lived decay products in the atmosphere. ThP decay products are continually bei:J.g removed from the atmosphere, tending to attach to particulate matter and aerosols. In poorly ventilated areas (such as air tight houses, underground mines) radon can appr~ch equilibrium with its daughter product (Referenc~ 3). The concentration in dwellings depends on the number of sources, rates of emanation from sources, ventila-tion and outdoor concentrations. Concentrations can be much higher in indoor air than outside background levels and concentrations up to 0.37 Bq/L have been reported in slag and adobe huts in the U.S.S.R. (Reference 3). Building materials can be a significant source of radon inside houses (Reference 4,5). Table 1.2.(i) (adapted from reference 3) lists radon concentrations observed in dwellings around the world.
