Call for fee freeze When is the government going to stop banks from charging enormous exit loan fees? LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR:PAGE33 Cheap flats put on hold Plans to turn this lot into cheap housing have been put on hold Picture: BRAD FLEET By NIGEL ADLAM HE SAID IT JOHN Elferink Port Darwin MLA This is a victory for common sense A PLAN to build a block of cheap rental flats in Darwin city centre was put on hold yesterday. Ethan Affordable Housing withdrew the application after a meeting with the Territory Government. But company head Ashley Fenn denied that the plan had been scrapped. He said it would be resubmitted when the interpretation of supported accommodation had been cleared up. Mr Fenn said the housing would be aimed at young workers earning $15-20 an hour. Some neighbours complained that the project would lower the value of their homes. They also said the 10-storey development in Manton St would have only 25 car parking spaces for the 88 units. The block was originally supposed to be for short-term workers accommodation. But the planning application said the one-bedroom units would be for young adults with no rental history, people with personal issues, the disabled and the unemployed. The block was to have been part of the Federal Governments promise to build 50,000 affordable homes in Australia. About 1200 will be built in the Territory. The Manton St bedsits would have been only 21.5 sq m. Port Darwin MLA John Elferink said the purpose of the building was inappropriate. This is a victory for common sense, he said. Mr Fenn accused Mr Elferink of fear mongering and spreading rumours that former prisoners would be housed in the complex. Thats just not true, he said. Indigenous appointment THE NT Government is looking at appointing an Aboriginal person in the Office of the Childrens Commissioner following release of the Child Protection Inquiry Report. Child Protection Minister Kon Vatskalis told parliament the new position would be dedicated to investigating issues raised by the report and to help establish an Aboriginal child protection system in the Territory. Heads in cloud INFORMATION technology service provider SMBiT Professionals will hold a free workshop on future directions of technology for local small-to-medium-sized businesses in Alice Springs. SMBiT Professionals member and managing director of EH Technology Pty Ltd, Andrew McInally, said attendees will have questions relating to the cloud computing answered. One of our main objectives is to de-mystify the cloud. We will touch on some recent case studies of successful organisations leveraging the latest virtualisation and cloud technologies for greater productivity, services and lower total cost of ownership through the newest available technology, he said. Mr McInally said, while the session would cover broadband technologies available in Australia today and potential future technologies, it will also consider security implications. The workshop is on Monday at the Crowne Plaza.
