Child prostitute looked 19, says ex-MP HOBART: A former Tasmanian MP charged with having sex with a 12-year-old prostitute had reasonable grounds to believe she was an adult, a Hobart court has been told. Terry Martin, 53, pleaded not guilty in October to having sex with the girl, to taking a picture of her performing a sex act, and to possessing the photograph. Family slams drink-driver By MICHELLE DRAPER in Melbourne Jacob Bangoang JACOB Bangoang survived a perilous journey through crocodile-infested waters with his young family to escape war-torn Sudan, but it was a drunk driver in Australia who ruined his life. Clutching a photograph of his six-year-old son Bangoang Tut, killed by a drunk and unlicensed driver last December, Mr Bangoang slammed the jail sentence imposed on his childs killer. This is not (an) animal, it is a human life that has been lost, he said outside the court where Gary Edward Ryan was jailed for a maximum of eight years yesterday. Mr Bangoang said he felt Ryan was judged on his background, not on the crime committed. I think this is not fair. What he has done to our family, he ruined our lives. Bangoangs mother, Yomding Deng, wailed and clung to her husbands arm as he spoke to the media. The boys uncle Puk Yak said the family was unhappy with Ryans sentence, which came with a six-year minimum term. With time already served, Ryan, 26, could be eligible for parole in five years. Its not enough, Mr Yak said. It should be more. Bangoang was playing in the front yard of his Morwell home when Ryan ploughed through and crashed into him, his pregnant mother and two teenage relatives on December 20. Ryan, of Morwell, had drunk up to 18 beers at a Christmas party before driving and later recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.109. Moments before the accident, he was captured on video speeding, doing burnouts and fishtails. Dr Vandana Shiva, winner of the Sydney Peace Prize, releases peace doves along with students while attending the Peace Festival at Cabramatta High School yesterday. She received the award this week for courageous leadership of movements for social justice, the empowerment of women in developing countries, advocacy of the human rights of small farming communities and for her scientific analysis of environmental sustainability
