On the local market, most finance, mining and energy stocks retreated. However, the healthcare sector was buoyed by a $1.99 billion takeover offer for private hospitals and pathology operator Healthscope by private equity firms Carlyle Group and TPG Capital. The benchmark S&P/ ASX200 index was 64.4 points lower, or 1.46 per cent, at 4358.3 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index reversed 64.3 points, or 1.45 per cent, to 4372.7 points. On the Sydney Futures Ex change, the September share price index futures contract was 78 points weaker at 4328 points. Market observers attributed the fall on US markets to sagging consumer confidence and a mixed batch of second-quarter earnings results, reviving fears about the health of the economic recovery in the US. The Dow Jones Industrial Average index tumbled 261.41 points, or 2.52 per cent, to 10,097.90 on Friday. City Index head of dealing, Asia Pacific, Michael McCarthy said falls on US markets were also a result of the substantial gains made over the previous eight trading days. Mr McCarthy said US markets had gained more than 7 per cent in less than two weeks, and traders were not surprised to see the US mar ket take a breather. It was along the lines of a correction that we had to have. Markets rarely go anywhere in a straight line, he said. The market here opened near its lows and really hasnt done much since, suggesting that were seeing the same sort of adjustment here. Mr McCarthy said Saturdays announcement of a federal election on August 21 had no significant effect. I think there will be implications for the broad market and for individual sectors should either of the parties start going ahead (in the polls), he said. The most traded stock by volume was miner and explorer Sundance Resources, which resumed trading on Monday. Market turnover was 1.54 billion shares worth a total of $3.14 billion.
