3 KIDSMATTER UPDATE! On Tuesday 27 July, Sandra Harrington, Emma Secombe (parent) and Sue Orme (parent) attended training for Module Two of this program. Here are some observations from Emma: As a parent I consider myself fortunate to be part of Araluens KidsMatter Action Team. This in itself demonstrates the commitment of the College to care for and grow all aspects of our childrens learning and development. The training day explored the con cept of Social & Emotional Learning (SEL), how this links with the first component of KidsMatter A Positive School Community (which included the parent and staff survey conducted last term) and explored how explicitly teaching SEL at the classroom level is integral for successful lifelong learning for our children. One definition which I can understand: SEL is the process of acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to recognize and manage emotions; developing caring and concern for others, making responsible decisions; establishing positive relationships; and handling challenging situations capably. SEL is already successfully applied within the classrooms and the College as a whole. These activities include: Classroom morning devotions, Hi Five process of dealing with conflict students are taught across the whole College and Buddies to name a few. (The areas that the school community have identified as requiring attention are able to be seen from the survey results). From here the school as a whole would like to review a couple of SEL programs that will able to be explicitly teach Social & Emotional skills and competence at the classroom level. If you have any questions or would like further information or would like to get involved please dont hesitate to contact me. Emma Secombe Parent of children in Year 1 & 4 at ACC 0415418450.
