Key initiatives implemented in the first 12 months of Closing The Gap include; 10 additional teachers in remote schools and the first component of an additional 200 Commonwealth funded teachers in remote schools. 15 new classrooms and three mobile pre-schools. Additional student counsellors in schools, attendance campaign and attendance plans. Appointment of NT Childrens Commissioner Dr Howard Bath. Establishment of Child Abuse Taskforce, based in Alice Springs and Darwin. 12 extra community sport and recreation officers. Rehabilitation programs for sexual offenders in correctional centres. Eleven new child protection workers positions created in Family and Community Services offices across the Territory. Transfer of positions from CDEP to paid jobs in Local Government. During 2007-2008, 150 positions were transferred, and a further 200 positions have been identified to transfer in 2009. Putting in place funding agreements for the $647 million Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP). Introducing an electronic system for scanning of photo ID required for the purchase of alcohol in Alice Springs and Katherine. Establishment of an Indigenous Affairs Advisory Council. Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation engaged for Return to Home programs in Darwin and Palmerston. Community-based indigenous family violence offender programs in Nguiu, Yuendumu and Tennant Creek. Alcohol management plans in place in Alice Springs, Katherine, East Arnhem, Palmerston and Tennant Creek. Development of a new midwifery service and ante natal care programs to support remote communities.
