Insiders guide to the Binns Track travelnt.com Tales from the Territory, April 2008 contact: media.tourismnt@nt.gov.au www.travelnt.com Old Police Station Waterhole Its recommended that you allow at least 10 days to complete the Binns Track in its entirety. Use this guide for all the must see attractions along the way. DAY 1 Mt Dare to Alice Springs Found at only two other locations in the world, the Mac Clarke Conservation Reserve is spiked with more than 2000 rare Acacia peuce or Waddywood trees. Known for their extremely hard wood, the trees were once used to make Aboriginal digging tools. DAY2 Alice Springs to Ruby Gap Relive the heyday of Central Australias 1980s gold rush fever at Arltunga Historical Reserve. DAY 3 Ruby Gap to Gem Tree Strike semi-precious stones fossicking the creek beds of Gemtree and Mud Tank, north of Alice Springs. Find zircons, which reflect a palette of champagne tones, buried deep in Mother Earth and rich-red garnets closer to the surface. DAY 4 Gemtree to Davenport Ranges Cool off at Old Police Station Waterhole in the Davenport Ranges and hear the chorus of waterbirds. The waterhole is only accessible via the demanding Frew River Loop four-wheel drive track. DAY 5 Davenport Ranges to Devils Marbles Set up camp at the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve and watch the sun descend behind the massive terracotta boulders. Original stockyards at Bullita Homestead Plan your adventure DAY 6 Devils Marbles to Tennant Creek Visit the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre to learn more about the Warumungu peoples connection to the land. Later, strike a beat with local Aboriginal musicians at Winanjjikari Music Centre. DAY 7 Tennant Creek to Dunmarra After heavy rain, stop at Newcastle Waters and see the large flocks of water birds that create an oasis in this otherwise goldentinged land. DAY 8 Dunmarra to Humbert River Track Take a scenic chopper flight over Nitmiluk and Kakadu national parks from Victoria River Downs one of the largest cattle stations in the Territory. DAY 9 Humbert River Track to Bullita Homestead Wander through the original timber stockyards at Bullita Homestead believed to be one of the oldest in the Territory - and get lost in the stories of yesteryear that don the homestead walls. DAY 10 Bullita Homestead to Timber Creek Wake early for an adventure at Limestone Gorge a picture perfect swimming hole engulfed by soaring gorge walls. Explore the dolomite and crater formations in the ravine and cool off, before driving north to Timber Creek. Fossickers at Gemtree
