www.ntnews.com.au Northern Territory News, Monday, January 18, 2010 39 P U B : N T N E W S D A T E : 1 8 -J A N -2 0 1 0 P A G E : 3 9 C O L O R : C M Y K FOOTROT FLATS 1999 SCHOOLBOY world champion Ian Thorpe repelled a serious challenge to his 400-metre freestyle supremacy with a stunning display of finishing power at the World Cup meet in Hobart. Thorpe edged Grant Hackett to win in 3min 42.19. CHRIS WILLIAMS WANGURI YES. Its definitely the case, with the local boysmaking upmost of the sides before Christmas and interstate players becoming available afterwards. ROD McLEAN LEANYER YES. Everyone says that, but the longer you can make the first part the better off youll be coming into the second one. LEIGH JENNINGS WANGURI YES. Its probably caused by the break being a bit too long, but then again you need it, its a tough one to resolve. ALI JOHNSTON THE GARDENS YES. TheChristmas break is too long, particularly when the first half ismore like a pre-season. Clubs dont get really serious until after the break. IS THERE TWO SEASONS IN THE NTFL COMPETITION, ONE BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND ANOTHER AFTER THE FESTIVE SEASON? ANTHONY HOBAN LUDMILLA HEIGHTS YES.As long as Ive been here it has. The season seems to step up a level after Christmas regardless of whats happened before. Not easy being BMXer in Top End REGARDING the NTs recent success in the National round held in Queensland for BMX, and our NT rep who made the finals. I have been riding in Queensland, Melbourne and SA and their BMX tracks are open all the time, so there is unlimited training time for one to become good and a contender at a national level, whereas here in Darwin they are closed and allow a practice day once a week and then the racing one night a week. Not much room for improvement! I assume councils run southern tracks and Darwins are privately owned. Darwin could lead the way in Aussie BMX if we had 24 hour access to train. Surely the council should put more in to this sport, and Mountain biking for that matter as these sports have mass involvement that seems to go unnoticed by councils. The NT is so far behind the 8 ball when it comes to BMX and Mountain biking it is frustrating to be a rider and live here. Please more tracks, more land, more funding. Every one has ridden and owned a bike but most forget too quick when they buy their first car or get their NTG company car. Steve, Parap NTs best matter of opinion MATTHEW Stephen is quick to criticise reporter Peter Tiffen for his story on boxer John Siriotis. Stephen asks whether Tiffen bothered to read the Northern Territory News stories on the great fight, published back in 1987. Problem is, Matthew, Tiffen wrote those stories too. If you were at the fight, you would have seen Tiffen interviewing both boxers in the ring immediately after Siriotis was declared the winner. As for the debate over who is the best Territory boxer, we can all have an opinion. Ill say this though ... you will not find a greater ambassador for the sport of boxing than John Siriotis ... a champion inside and outside the ring. Boz, Nightcliff ONMOTORSPORT why is a the V8s $70 for a hot pass and the sprintcar title $90. I cant believe the prices for the Australian Sprintcar title what a joke how do they think families can afford that? Big sprintcar fan ONRUGBYLEAGUE I have just noticed thatWillie Mason of NRLClub Roosters must have a relation in theNT. In the classified column (NT News) there is a Monumental Mason. FrankBost,Malak ONCRICKET Huge congrats to the nt strike team in albury, bloody stuck it to em! Lookin forward to playin this season! The bunyip family Judging by the negative bowling of the Pakistanis against Ponting andClarke they deserved to get a flogging. Brian, Darwin Ricky Ponting is the best captain in world cricket. 2 all those still not on board (especially after the historic win) get stuffed!Rod,malak and fellow tasweegen ONFOOTBALL Both stmarys players let off by tribunal after being reportedbig suprise NOT JT Parap Does the aflnt tribunal favour certain players & clubs? St mary club players very lucky recently. ONSOCCER If the world cup came 2 oz it wuld give all australia a break from crap like nrl, i wuld rather watch the grass grow, as for afl u know u got problemswhen adamgoodes is in an ad 2 bring the theworld cup here, soccer is the real football! ONBOXING Mrs swan andmr fred spurling, bottom line of johns story is about his title, has nothing to dowith james swan or ricky peterson, im sure their both great fighters but neither of themwere mentioned in JOHNS ARTICLE!? So therefor, it has nothing to dowith them and their boxing history. Stop beating about the bush. Get danny green nmundine in the ring. And danny, make sure u knock him out!Crazy fan of palmy Mundine your entrancewas great, the 2 flags flying, U r the peoples champ, boy how fast is he. The greatest boxa Aussies have ever seen. Oh yea another no one another big victory for the bigmouthmungbean. Mike, Fannie Bay Mundinewas terrific, the Pay Per View foxtel commentators were very unfair towards theman. Retired sports people R the best sledgers. PJHumptyDoo NICE JOB SKIPPER: One reader hails Ricky Ponting as the best captain in world cricket. But is he right?
