SPORT Leading the way in more ways than one ByANDREWALOIA EXAMPLE SET: New Nightcliff rugby league coach Dave Johansen puts some of his players through their paces at Richardson Park. Picture: NICK WESLH IF coaching was just a matter of follow the leader then new Nightcliff coach Dave Johansen is sorted. The hulking Dragons second rower and Nightcliff club champion has replaced Merg Mikaelian as coach of the Darwin Rugby League (DRL) powerhouse. From the moment the former Penrith lower-grade player slipped into the red, white and green in 2007 he became a cult sensation. That is why the 31-year-old is happy to take on his first coaching appointment while still playing. As far as being a player, my role wont change, he said. All I can really do is lead by example. The way I look at it, coaching from the sideline would make me more nervous because Im not in there trying to make a difference myself. The Nightcliff board have been astute in giving Johansen the backup he needs, employing a brainstrust that any DRL club would envy. Dragons favourite son, rugby league journeyman and Scottish international Duncan Macgillivray and club champion Kane Bonson will be Johansens deputies. They will be my eyes, ears and brains on the sideline, Johansen smiled. Under Mikaelian Nighcliff enjoyed modest success. Last season they finished second on the table but went out of the finals series in straight sets. Johansen saw first hand as captain that the side probably punched above its weight. To go pound-for-pound for the premiership, Johansen said, will take some savvy recruiting. Last season we may not have had the most talented side but we finished second on the table with hard work and determination, he said. The two years Ive been here we have had a great forward pack, but probably lacked a bit in the backs. Im not hiding that we are looking to recruit some key position players. Johansen is keen to get started, calling on all interested players to contact him on 0411 624 265. Nightcliff has its official sign on day is January 31 at St Marys Football Club, Abala Rd, kicking off soon after.
